So I applied and then had an interview over video. Progressive's interviews are all about the STAR method. They actually give you study materials and like, sample questions to help you prepare. You should totally have an "elevator speech" ready about your skills and why you'd be a good fit. I had to answer 6 STAR questions, and honestly, if you're prepared, it's a great interview. They want to hear about your personal experiences and how you handled things. The interview is about 45 minutes, and then they call you a week later to let you know if you got the job. Even though I didn't get it, they wanted to hire me! Turns out, Progressive decided not to hire anyone else right now.
- Can you share an instance where someone became angry or upset with you, and describe how you managed that situation?
Software Developer/Tester Intern
So for the behavioral phone interview part, I use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to give answers that are structured and show my experience and how I make decisions. For instance, when they ask about a tough situation, I pick one that shows I can solve problems, communicate well, and adapt. Situation: My old team had to deal with sudden project requirement changes right before a big deadline. The client wanted new features that really increased the project scope, and the team felt overloaded. Task: My job was to coordinate the project, so I needed to quickly figure out what could be done on time and guide the team to a plan that worked without messing up the quality. Action: I called a meeting right away to go over the new requests and figure out the most important parts. I talked openly with the client to get their expectations clear and agreed on delivering in phases. Inside the team, I gave tasks based on who was good at what and set up a smooth workflow so everyone was on the same page. I also had quick daily check-ins to see how things were going and fix any issues early. Result: By changing the project plan and keeping communication open, we got the main features done on time and planned the rest for the next sprint. The client liked that we were responsive and flexible, and it actually made our relationship better. The team felt more ready for unexpected changes, and we decided to use this phased approach for future projects. Using STAR helps me be focused, brief, and outcome-focused in phone interviews, making sure my answers show how I handle problems and help get good results.
- Can you share an instance of a conflict you experienced with a colleague and describe its resolution?

The interview process at Progressive was really well put together and organized. Every part of it felt clear and planned out. All the interviewers I talked to knew their stuff, paid attention, were polite, and acted professionally, making it a smooth and positive experience. If you're interviewing with Progressive, I really suggest using the STAR method. Get your technical experiences ready and written out in the Situation–Task–Action–Result format. Have about 10-12 good examples ready to go. This will help you explain your accomplishments and show your skills. Overall, it was a great and impressive interview.
- In a situation like X, how would you react? How would you handle a tough customer or deal with resistance from a peer?
- Prepare your technical experiences using the STAR method.

I had a recruiter call that was about an hour long and included some behavioral questions. Then, a technical round happened about a week or two later. A couple of weeks after that, I got the news I had passed. Following that, there were 3 more hour-long behavioral rounds. They were pretty chill, and all the interviewers were nice and easy to talk to. Even so, it was a lot to go through 5 rounds of interviews, only to be rejected. They did call to let me know, though.
- When you worked on a project and had difficulty with a stakeholder, how did you work through it?
- How did you work through a complex issue and what steps did you take?
- When you had to finish a task while working with an outside group, what did you do?
