Head of Sales
Applied and got contacted pretty quickly, about a week later. Had an initial screening with HR that involved typical questions. The recruiter was really nice, positive, and polite. They acted like all my answers were great, except when they asked about salary expectations and if I had flexibility there. Even though I later found out I wouldn't be moving on, it was a good experience overall.
- Could you start by telling me about yourself?
- What motivates your desire for a change?
- Could you describe your leadership style?
Principal Product Manager
It was a three stage interview process. First was a recruiter call to talk about my experience and salary. Then I had a call with the hiring manager where I was asked a product sense question, kind of like a case study, to see how I'd make a product strategy. They also asked some competency questions. The last round had four 45-minute stakeholder calls with people from Product, Design, Engineering, and a VP/Director. It felt like four more rounds but just competency questions. Overall it was a good process, the team seemed smart, and it felt like a real conversation. I didn't get the job because I messed up one part and didn't answer questions right, which was my bad. My advice is to be ready, listen carefully to the questions, and use the STAR method.
- How would you create a product strategy and plan?
Software Engineer
Started with a recruiter screen, then a 60-minute tech screen where I had to solve a medium LeetCode problem which was pretty straightforward. The final round was supposed to be 4 stages, usually spread over 2 days depending on schedules. The people there were super nice and enthusiastic, really selling the work-life balance, which is a big plus. My final round didn't go so well though. I was blindsided by the system design part and it threw me off for the API implementation, where I even missed a simple BST optimization. I did better on the next two, a behavioral and another LeetCode medium, but those are generally easier so it was too late by then. Smartsheet's acquisition by private equity means no more equity benefits, but base pay and bonus seem the same. So maybe not the best place if salary is your top priority, but if you're looking for a relaxed environment, good learning, and great colleagues, it seems like a solid choice.
- Solve a Leetcode medium DSA problem for the tech screen and one of the final rounds.
- Implement an API.
- Discuss optimizations for the API implementation, possibly using light DSA knowledge like BST.
Human Resources
I had a 30-minute phone interview that went pretty well. They asked about my experience with specific systems, and while I admitted I didn't have it, I said I was eager to learn. They decided to move me to the next round. The following week, I met with the manager, who immediately told me they wouldn't be moving forward because I lacked the required system experience, and they were prioritizing candidates who already had it. She mentioned the recruiter shouldn't have advanced me. This was frustrating because I prepped a lot for both interviews and rearranged my schedule for the virtual interview. It felt really unorganized, and I wish someone had told me beforehand that I wouldn't be considered rather than telling me two minutes into the interview. It was quite disappointing.
- Can you tell me about your ability to work independently?
