First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oscar Health.
Software Engineer
After the HR screen, I was asked to pick my preferred programming language for a CodeSignal assessment and give my availability for three weeks later. Even with this advance notice, the interviewer for my live coding round didn't know Java and mentioned a background in a different engineering area. A senior-level technical interview should be a two-way chat, but this was entirely one-sided. I spent an hour explaining my architectural choices and logic to someone who just agreed with everything without any follow-up or clarifying questions. Getting rejected the next day suggested this was probably a formality interview. If a company already has a candidate in mind or is just trying to fill a quota, I'd suggest they value candidates' time more and ensure interviewers are technically qualified for the role.

Program Manager
So my interview process with Oscar Health for the Program Manager, Case Management gig, I got referred in so started with the application, then hit up by the recruiter for a quick screen. After that, I had a chat with the Hiring Manager the same week. He was pretty quick to say I was good to go for the next rounds, which were the panel interviews. This panel had three senior managers and then supposed to be the VP of Operations. The first three chats went fine. But then, the last part with the VP? It never happened. She canceled the first time, saying her meeting ran late. I tried to reschedule through the recruiter coordinator, but radio silence. I even reached out to the Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition to try and get it sorted. Nothing. They just ghosted me and never set up another time. It was a bummer because the first bits were clear, but they just dropped the ball on the last big interview, so it's all unresolved.
- Tell me about managing programs fully end-to-end.
- Walk me through a program you owned completely, from start to finish.
Staff Software Engineer
The process started with a BFS Leetcode round, which went okay but they didn't know I was looking for front-end. Then there were three sessions in one day: a coding round comparing arrays, a product manager chat about an application bug and who it would affect (customer, Oscar, providers), and a System Design interview where they pushed infrastructure but I said I'd work with experts. HR did a wrap-up, and again, they didn't know I wanted front-end. The recruiter apologized and mentioned maybe a hiring manager round, but it turned out to be a third round: another System Design session, this time more focused on data structures than cloud infra. I thought it was going great and liked everyone. HR touched base again. Then they asked for a fourth round, with three sessions in a day, and no documentation this time. I was asked to demo an app I built but declined due to confidentiality, and they never got back to me on that. The first session was with the 'demo guy' where we talked about my projects and tech, which I thought went alright. The second was with a Director of Engineering who seemed to attack me, asking what I built and why it was difficult, then saying it was simple. The third session was with a product owner doing the same demo as before, and when I questioned why, they ended it immediately. Finally, a Recruiter wrap-up where they confirmed they do have UI roles. Got an 'informal' rejection a week later.

So, there were SQL queries focused on healthcare scenarios. Then a case study using Excel to forecast man-hours and dollars. After those technical parts, we had a panel interview. They asked what I'd do in specific situations, making sure to consider HIPAA laws and data sensitivity. Also, how fines can influence decisions, since the healthcare industry often faces fines and lawsuits. Be ready with lots of scenarios for typical questions like 'Tell me about a time you had a deadline but...' - these aren't healthcare-specific, just general.
- SQL queries for healthcare scenarios and an Excel case study for forecasting man hours/dollars.
