After an initial video call with the hiring manager, I was given a take-home assignment. I submitted it within a day and received a rejection, which surprised me since I thought I understood the open-ended nature of the task. While I appreciate the practice, I do feel these 'three-hour' challenges can be a waste of time if the company isn't genuinely interested in filling the role or if the candidate has no real shot. This felt like a red flag, as some company reviews suggest similar experiences. I did the work willingly for the practice, though.

Technical Coding System Design Behavioral

First, there was a quick recruiter chat about my background and if I'm interested in embedded systems. After that, I had a technical interview where they asked C/C++ coding questions, gave me debugging scenarios to work through, and we talked a bit about system design. The people interviewing me were nice and offered useful tips.

Behavioral Technical Coding

I sent in my application in October and didn't hear back until the end of February. The first stage was a one-hour phone chat with a technical recruiter and an engineer. It was mostly behavioral, focusing on fit and my experience. They were upfront about the demanding nature of the job, highlighting the fast pace and long hours, basically signaling a poor work-life balance. After that, I had to complete a timed assessment with design problems, but I felt rushed and couldn't finish everything. The final step was a video call with the hiring managers to go over my assessment. I had a feeling early on that it wasn't a perfect match, though I admit I could have performed better on the assessment.

Behavioral Technical

It started with an HR screening interview, followed by a hiring manager interview. After that, they provided a technical assessment that lasted 2.5 hours. I made it to the tech assessment stage. I felt I did great on the assessment, but the feedback I received was strange - they said my answers were too academic and they wanted more practical answers. It felt like they were hesitant to hire people with advanced degrees. I asked for an example of what they meant for one of the assessment problems, but naturally, no one sent anything. The ironic part is that the company was founded by two PhD students, and they don't seem to value my expertise and extensive academic background. I don't think I'll be applying there again.
