First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Formlabs.
Mechanical Engineer
It started with a 2-hour technical exam, a free response test with 5 questions. Then, there was a remote interview with engineers where they asked about my answers, and this took hours. If I passed that, I had a 6-hour in-person interview in Boston with different staff members. Finally, there were additional calls afterward.
- Can you elaborate on your thought process regarding the answers you provided in the technical exam?
Mechanical Engineer Intern
It was a good interview experience. Two interviewers were present. They began by inquiring about the projects I've completed. Subsequently, they asked for detailed information about those projects. After I addressed all their inquiries, I was presented with a problem to solve. I was expected to articulate my thought process while working through the problem.
- Can you compare the stress-strain graphs of steel and aluminum?
Mechanical Engineer
I sent in my application in October and didn't hear back until the end of February. The first stage was a one-hour phone chat with a technical recruiter and an engineer. It was mostly behavioral, focusing on fit and my experience. They were upfront about the demanding nature of the job, highlighting the fast pace and long hours, basically signaling a poor work-life balance. After that, I had to complete a timed assessment with design problems, but I felt rushed and couldn't finish everything. The final step was a video call with the hiring managers to go over my assessment. I had a feeling early on that it wasn't a perfect match, though I admit I could have performed better on the assessment.
- Can you share an instance where you experienced failure?
