First, I had a quick 30-minute call to get acquainted. Then, they sent over a small sales project, and I was asked to explain my approach during a 30-45 minute video chat with the sales team leaders. Finally, there was a short 30-minute call with the Head of Sales.

Behavioral

I went to a sales networking event at the office. It was a very casual event with pizza and beer, embodying the typical startup vibe. The office was an open floor plan in a converted warehouse, filled with geeky trinkets and memorabilia. I met several members of the sales team who were mingling around. Afterward, there was an informal presentation about the company, its future plans, and the sales team. We were then given the chance to sign up for a 15-minute 'lightning round' interview with a member of the sales team. This was presented as a casual chat, not a formal interview, intended mainly for mutual get-to-know-you purposes. No resumes were needed, just a conversation about your background and professional history. Since it's a 3D printing company, most people there wouldn't have direct experience selling 3D printers. My 15-minute interview seemed to go well. I followed up with everyone I met to express my thanks and continued interest. A week later, the head of 'HR' contacted me to say they wouldn't be moving forward with my application. I was surprised because I hadn't formally applied yet, wanting to gauge my fit before submitting an application, and I had received positive feedback from everyone I met. This makes me question the hiring process. Also, ditch the bagpipe parade and nerf gun salute for old printers; your credibility is shot. Act like a company that your head of sales would want you to be, not a 'neverland' for tech industry castoffs. It reminds me of that scene in Hook where Peter is served imaginary food – that's how I imagine lunch is every day at Formalbs, and that's how they run the company. 'Use your imagination, Peter.'

So I interviewed at Formlabs for an inside sales job. The interviewers seemed uninterested, and the vibe was off. They gave me a tour, but it felt forced. After an hour, they said they'd check if their boss was free, or I'd have to come back. They came back quickly and said I'd be contacted for the next round. A week later, I got an email saying they weren't moving forward. I know I wasn't at my best, but a growing company shouldn't set wrong expectations. It feels like a blessing in disguise because I don't want to work for a company that lies.
