Applied for a role and heard back within a week for a phone interview. The process was disorganized: recruiter communications were confusing, the phone interview was on Zoom but cameras weren't required, yet no Zoom link was sent. I had to reach out 15 minutes before, delaying the start. The recruiter had her camera on, contradicting the prior communication. She seemed unfamiliar with the role and related fields (healthcare, public health, community outreach). She struggled to answer my questions. She sent a 'next steps' email afterward, but five days later I got an automated rejection saying candidates were 'more aligned.' It felt like they were just fulfilling a quota. Set measured expectations if interviewing here.

Behavioral Technical

I thought I would be interviewing with one person, the manager, but the talent acquisition personnel failed to inform me that my interview would be with an additional three people. The way I was treated it was as if I was not a good fit from the start unfortunately. I felt I did not get a chance to showcase my experience and how it would be a good match for the position at hand. This is probably first time in decades that I have felt so unwelcome in an interview setting. The questions I was asked was if I was seeking an entry-level position.

There were four interviews: Recruiter, HR, VP of Analytics, and Sr. Dir of Analytics. The first two were pretty straightforward, mostly checking general knowledge, availability, and salary expectations. The VP wanted to go over what the job would entail. The Sr. Director, who is the hiring manager, went into more advanced topics and technical details related to Analytics. No specific technical interview was conducted.

Technical Coding

My interview experience was a letdown. The hiring manager was a no-show, and I ended up being interviewed by three engineers instead. They didn't seem prepared for interviewing and spent more time bragging about their own skills than assessing if I was a good fit. The questions jumped all over technical topics, expecting me to be an expert in everything, which felt unrealistic and irrelevant to the job. One interviewer was super self-absorbed, which made the whole thing awkward. Asking me to recall Python code and SQL queries from memory in 2025 feels really outdated, especially with how advanced AI and hiring practices are now. I expected a more practical, skills-based evaluation, not just rote memorization. The whole process didn't live up to my expectations, especially after all the time I put into preparing. Westlake could improve by making sure the hiring manager is there or, if not, that the panel is prepped for a proper interview. They should ask relevant questions about the job and skills needed, not just random technical trivia. And they really need to respect candidates' time and make it a professional and engaging experience. Making people recite code in 2025 is ridiculous. Wake up!
