First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Westpac Group.
Business Analyst
I got the interview through a recruiter. I thought it went really well, the interviewers agreed and commended all my answers. Then I found out I wasn't progressed to the next stage which I found incredibly strange given the feedback during the interview. Maybe don't gaslight and let on that someone is everything you're looking for and then say no to them.
- How would you approach a challenging situation?
- What's your strategy for dealing with difficult stakeholders?
- Can you walk me through a project where you had to analyze complex data?
Customer Service Representative
Submitted an application on the Careers website and was then sent an online Culture assessment to see if our values matched up. It was pretty simple and really focused on PEOPLE, not just seeing us as work cogs (like ANZ). About an hour later, I got a link for a video interview that had 4 different parts.
- Can you tell us about yourself?
- Could you share a bit about your background?
- What motivated you to apply for this position?
Software Engineer
It started with a phone call, then an online test, followed by a remote video interview. The video interview was strange; instead of a typical interview, they audited my current role's security. They asked if I did specific tasks, and when I said no, they marked it as bad. They questioned why my security posture wasn't like a bank's, and I responded that perhaps it's because we're not a bank. They seemed to think I was a terrible candidate for not having a hardened security posture like theirs. My advice to Westpac is that bank-specific security practices should be trained during onboarding, not expected beforehand, especially from those not working at a bank. I say this as someone working at an ISO270001 company with annual security training and certifications.
- Can you describe how you handle and prioritize your tasks when faced with pressure?
Bank Officer
People are complaining that some companies ask for references very early on in the hiring process. They contact the references, and then the company just disappears without making an offer, which upsets the job seeker because they wasted their contacts' time. Some recruiters even ask for references before a second interview, and then there's no communication. While there aren't official numbers, there's a lot of negative talk online about this practice, with people calling it unprofessional, a bad sign, or even a way to get free intel on industry contacts. So yeah, it seems like your feeling is right, this does happen and it's really annoying.
