First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Scotiabank.
Senior Manager, Compliance Learning
I went through a three-stage interview process for a senior manager role in the GBM&T Compliance Learning function. The interviews themselves were a positive experience. The recruiter was personable and enthusiastic about Scotiabank's culture and the growth of their Dallas office. The hiring manager was straightforward and gave good context about the role. The panel was engaged and professional. One panel member specifically commented positively at the end of the interview, which left me feeling good about where things stood. Where the process fell short was in communication after the panel interview. I completed all three stages within the first two weeks, then waited with no proactive updates. When I followed up, I learned other candidates were still being interviewed, which was fine, but that context should have been shared without me having to ask. At one point the recruiter committed to providing an update by end of week and didn't follow through until I sent another follow-up the following week. In total, it was three weeks from my final panel interview to receiving a rejection, and most of that time I had no visibility into where things stood or what the timeline looked like.

Senior Technical Analyst
I was contacted for this opportunity through a recruitment agency. The interview process included a rescheduling, but overall communication was maintained. The role was initially described as being focused on Unix/Linux experience. During the interview, however, there was a stronger emphasis on governance-related responsibilities, which seemed slightly different from the original expectations shared. This created a bit of a mismatch in terms of role alignment, as governance experience is often associated with more senior positions. Overall, the experience was positive in terms of interaction, but there could be better alignment between the job description and the interview focus to ensure clarity for candidates.
- Did you lead the governance task in your previous work?
Backend Developer
The interview process had two main parts: first, a Codility test, and second, a technical interview. During the technical interview, the panel was relaxed and welcoming. They didn't review my Codility results directly but asked some questions that touched upon it. They began by asking about my current team's setup, my responsibilities, and my general work history. Then, we moved on to more technical topics. They asked me to describe a complex problem or project I had fully designed and implemented, whether it was a new feature or an existing task.
- Can you describe how you would architect a payment system?
- How would you design a system to generate unique identifiers in the format COUNTRYCODE-PROVIDER-SEQUENCENUMBER for each record?
- If you needed to design a file upload system without immediate cloud provider support, where files would be stored in the database, what approach would you take for storing the file, detecting its extension, and what critical factors would you consider?
UI Automation Engineer
The interview started with a recruiter call, followed by a phone screen. Then, there were technical questions covering Python basics, language concepts, typical use cases, and Selenium testing. Behavioral questions were also included, touching on teamwork, views on AI, and how I approach self-learning and getting better over time. Unfortunately, I haven't heard back since, and my application seems to have gone unanswered.
- Can you explain what OOP is and outline the reasons for preferring Python over Java?
- Could you elaborate on Python fundamentals, covering both language concepts and common usage scenarios?
- Were there any questions related to Selenium testing?
