First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Manulife.
Software Engineer
So, there were two rounds in the interview process. The first one was with HR, mostly to understand the role, my background, and some basic info. The second round was technical. Honestly, even though I didn't get selected, I thought the technical interview was pretty fair, not super hard. They asked stuff related to their project tech like React, Node, and SQL, and threw in a simple real-time challenge. I'd prepped mostly on .NET and C# because the job description mentioned them, so some of the tech questions weren't exactly what I prepared for. It was a good learning experience though, a good reminder to prep broadly for both the job description and what they're actually using.
No confirmed questions were included in this interview report.
Information and Risk Intern
I first connected with HR, who then passed my resume to the hiring manager. Next, I had an in-person interview with the manager that lasted about half an hour. This was disappointing because I really admire Manulife. After the interview, I didn't hear back for over two weeks. When I followed up, I was told they chose another candidate. On the bright side, they told me why I wasn't selected: 'overqualification,' which seems strange for a 6-month internship where you're expected to learn on the job. The interviewer was pleasant and easy to talk to. Remember, the interview is a two-way street, so you'll enjoy it if you can communicate effectively.
- Can you describe your understanding of what this role entails?
- Please share your commitment level to this role and confirm if you are okay with a 6-month commitment.
AI Engineer
Had an initial chat with HR to go over my background and answer some tech questions, like how to fix a slow API. Then there was a 90-min interview block. Two of those were SQL rounds. The first SQL round was pretty straightforward, the interviewer was cool about me not being super fresh on SQL since I work with LLMs now, but I couldn't write the query myself or share my screen, had to dictate it. The second SQL call got cancelled because the interviewer had issues, but they said it would have been SQL too. The next call was with a software engineering manager and a data engineering manager, mostly about my software engineering experience and a scenario question I handled okay. The second call I mentioned didn't happen, and I got rejected, which was annoying but I guess my feedback wasn't great. The whole thing was pretty chill, just wish I'd prepped more.
- What's your approach to building an API with a web framework?
- Can you provide the SQL query to count a specific set of items?
- What distinguishes a SQL view from a SQL table?
Sales Agent
So basically, Manulife wanted to chat and see if I was a good fit for the agent role. They started with some basic questions about my background. Then came the situational stuff, which was pretty interesting. I had to go out and actually ask a stranger what they thought about a life insurance product. After that, I had to report back to the interviewer with my assessment of that person's opinion. We wrapped up with a role-play where I had to do a product consultation. It was all pretty chill, no stress.
- What drove you to select this career path?
- Tell me about your assessment of the individual you polled about the life insurance product.
- Please conduct a product consultation scenario.

“Could you implement LeetCode "704. Binary Search" for me? Given an array of integers nums sorted in ascending order, and an integer target, write a function to search target in nums. If target exists, then return its index. Otherwise, return -1. You must write an algorithm with O(log n) runtime complexity.”
