Aeronautical Analyst
Started with a recruiter call, which was super basic, just getting to know me and my background. Then there was a technical interview over Teams, where I had to brief an instrument approach plate and explain chart symbols and numbers, basically like an instrument checkride. The final stage was an in-person interview that turned out to be a fast-paced, 6-person panel (5 team leads and the manager). They asked a mix of HR, behavioral, basic technical, and in-depth technical and higher-level behavioral questions. It was pretty intense, more than I expected, like a full instrument checkride and then some. After the interview, I had lunch with team members and toured the campus. They covered all travel expenses for me, being out of state, including rental car, hotel, food, and rideshare. They even covered my spouse's expenses too. Overall, a really great experience, even though I didn't get an offer.
No confirmed questions were included in this interview report.
Electrical Design Engineer
Had a 45 min initial call with the recruiter, then a 1 hour technical screen with an engineer. After that, I was flown out to Olathe for an all-day technical panel with 3 sessions and lunch. The first two stages were pretty relaxed, with interviewers asking about my resume and what I thought were the best circuit elements. But the in-person part was rough. I applied for the fitness watch hardware team, but it turned out all the teams interviewing me were for the aviation group, which wasn't what I expected. To make things worse, the last group I met with was rude and condescending. They gave a paper test on electronics, covering op amps, capacitors, diodes, LEDs, behavioral questions, my resume, and some basic circuit design.
- Could you design a circuit for an LED to connect to a microcontroller?
- How would you analyze the AC behavior of an operational amplifier?
- Explain Bode Plots in the context of capacitors.
Design Engineer Intern
I got contacted through campus recruiting. First interview was 30 mins, half behavioral asking why Garmin and to describe a project showing programming skills, then HR interview. Then a 1-hour interview with 30 mins behavioral about projects and 30 mins technical. They really want to make sure you know your basics.
- Can you explain what Op-amps are?
- Can you explain the non-inverting configuration for Op-amps?
- What are bode plots?
Software Engineer Intern
I got the interview at a career fair and it was conducted by two Garmin employees. They asked me questions about my projects and some of my coding experiences, like to discuss a coding challenge I've faced. Then there was a technical part where I had to code and they asked about Bitwise Operators. They also asked about my thought process during the technical part. I advanced to the next round, which was a 15-minute phone interview where they asked some basic behavioral questions. The technical interview was definitely harder than the behavioral one, and it felt like a real interview. The technical questions themselves were not too difficult.
- Can you tell me about a difficult coding challenge you encountered?
- What was your thought process when you were solving the coding problems?
- Could you explain what Bitwise Operators are?
