First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Garmin.
Design Engineer
The interview process involved a recruiter call for HR/behavioral questions, followed by a technical phone screen with the hiring manager. Then there was an on-site with 6 separate interviews. The on-site started very technical, then we discussed software block diagrams, had a project manager discussion, a lunch interview with 3 managers, did an Arduino coding project, and finished with a discussion about one of my projects. Make sure you can talk in-depth about your projects at internships, side projects, etc. Also, prepare questions in advance. And practice the general questions (have stories to illustrate behavioral questions). Overall, the experience was good. Everyone was responsive and interested in their work and the company mission. I usually heard back within a week, sometimes just a couple days. I turned down the offer because I got a more interesting one.
- Can you design a software block diagram for a garage door opener?
- Can you identify issues within a given schematic?
- Could you write some basic Arduino code to achieve a specific outcome?
Engineer
Applied for one position but was asked to rate skills for another with a very different skillset but related title. Understand they want to know expertise level, but would have applied for the Java position if interested. This position clearly stated different skills. The interviewer clearly didn't want me from the start, evident from her tone, wanting to finish quickly. She wouldn't let me finish answers and repeatedly asked the same behavioral questions. For example, asking about desired qualities in team members multiple times. She read the job description for the *other* position line by line, asking me to rate my skills, which was absurd. Anyone can rate SQL skills, but she asked me to rate skills on a job responsibility sentence. She ended the interview early, didn't ask if I had questions even when I asked, and gave one-word answers. She wanted to finish from the beginning and was rude. She interrupted me and jumped to the next question. Overall, a very unpleasant experience, and they clearly don't want to recruit unless you're a white male.

Engineer
The hiring journey involved four interviews, with three of them being onsite. It kicked off with a phone screening with HR. Then, there was an onsite interview with both HR and the hiring manager. Following that, a practical interview took place, and the process concluded with a final interview with department managers. The entire experience spanned about three months from beginning to end.
- What standard interview questions does HR ask?
- Can you describe the informal, job-specific interviews with managers?
