First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Garmin.
Engineering Project Manager
It was a very structured interview process. The HR person was nice and helpful with information. The hiring manager seemed good too. They focused more on my technical understanding of systems rather than my project management skills for completing a project, which might be what they are looking for in this role.
- Have you worked as a software engineer before.
Project Manager
I had a recruiter call about culture and fit, then an in-person interview with more technical questions and a tour of the facility with two hiring managers. The hiring managers interviewing me couldn't tell me what the next step in the process would be if successful. I was told I would hear within two weeks and I didn't hear anything for a full month after the in-person interview. I received an automated email confirming I wasn't selected and I should 'apply for other opportunities that better suit my qualifications'. The people who interviewed me were all fantastic, but the process itself felt rigid, impersonal and bureaucratic; it discouraged me from applying again as I see those as signs of a poor fit with the culture I'm looking for at work.
- How do you ensure people are held responsible for their tasks?
Project Manager
The whole thing took about a month from start to finish. Started with a phone screen the first week, then a virtual meeting with two managers the next week. After that, I had an in-person interview with the same managers two weeks later, which lasted 2 hours. Everyone was really nice, but after a 7-hour round trip to KC, taking a day off work, and spending 7 hours on an Engineering Assessment (a presentation on potential tech partnerships for Garmin), I got a generic email about a week and a half after my last interview saying I didn't get the job, with no feedback. They also kept delaying when they said they'd have an answer.
- Can you explain AI and Machine Learning?
- Give a presentation on possible technology partnerships for Garmin.
- Tell me about a time you faced a difficult situation at work.
