Talent Experience Lead
A recruiter first got in touch around Thanksgiving, and the whole interview process stretched all the way to the last Friday before Christmas. There were a few red flags during the final on-site panel interview in RWC. I wasn't told beforehand that the senior director wouldn't be there in person, and she surprisingly joined virtually for her part. Also, during the interview, the director took a call from her son on her cell phone right in the middle of it. That moment felt like the beginning of the end, and it was clear I wasn't a priority candidate. I also met with the hiring manager for the second time, and she seemed really disengaged from the start. These experiences left a bad taste in my mouth and made it obvious I was the backup choice. I wasn't shocked to get an email the week before Christmas saying they weren't moving forward. I get having backup candidates, but having someone come on-site for three hours and treating them as a backup option the week before Christmas was pretty harsh. Big shout-out though to the other talent experience lead in the office who gave me a tour and treated me with dignity and respect.
- What's your approach to prioritization and staying organized?
Software Engineer
The first interview was about algorithms, specifically using a priority queue, and I was allowed to use the internet for this part. Then, there were four more interviews: a behavioral one, one with the hiring manager, a design interview where I had to design an elevator system, and a live coding algorithm question. They do provide feedback after the interviews, which is nice. Unfortunately, I didn't get an offer because they said I lacked experience, even though the feedback indicated all my interviews went well. It felt like a waste of my time since they reached out to me on LinkedIn, and I didn't even apply for the role.
- Could you design an object-oriented elevator system?
Outbound Business Representative
We started with a first call with talent acquisition on Zoom, then had a call with the hiring manager also on Zoom. After that, I had a call with another senior member of the sales team, again on Zoom. The next step was a presentation over Zoom where I had to present how I would target a chosen prospect to my hiring manager and two other senior sales team members. The final round was an in-person interview with the VP of EMEA sales, which also included a tour of the office.
- Tell me why you are interested in working for Box.
Product Manager
So the interview process at Box started with a recruiter screen to chat about my background, why I was interested, and if I seemed like a good fit. After that, I had a hiring manager interview to dive deeper into my experience and how I could help the team hit its goals. Honestly though, the hiring manager was super aggressive and confrontational, which made it feel more like an interrogation than an interview. The next step was a virtual onsite with a few different parts: a design interview focusing on my problem-solving skills, an engineering interview to see how I'd work with the tech folks, and a 'bar raiser' interview to check on leadership potential and cultural alignment. The whole thing wrapped up with a case presentation to the hiring manager and one of their peers, but again, the hiring manager totally took over, interrupting a lot and not giving the peer much chance to talk. In the end, I didn't get an offer, and honestly, I was relieved because it made me realize the culture wouldn't have been a good fit and I wouldn't have enjoyed working there.
- Tell me about a product you love.
- What improvements would you make to that product?
