First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Unity.
Software Engineer
It wasn't too tough. They didn't ask any leetcode questions. It was more about checking my conversation skills and my past experience and projects. There were 4 rounds in total, and one take-home test which was between the 2nd and 3rd round. The take-home test involved using unity to build a very basic project. After that, there was an interview where I had to describe my solution and make some live coded changes.
- Could you explain C# abstract classes?
- What's the difference between reference types and value types in C#?
- Can you tell me about quaternions in game dev rotations?
Senior Graphics Engineer
I was put in touch with the recruiter for their graphics team, who then suggested I interview with two different graphics departments. Both of these departments had a process that started with a call with the hiring manager, then went into two technical interviews with a group of 1-3 engineers each. In these technical interviews, we'd cover a range of hypothetical situations regarding processes, debugging, and tech design, along with some technical questions specific to their departments.
- Can you explain the distinction between scalar and vector registers?
- Imagine you load the newest build one morning and encounter a black screen upon startup; what steps would you take to resolve this?
- What is the difference between scalar and vector registers?
Product Designer
This was a 2-month interview process and I got ghosted after the final interview. HR headhunted me and was very responsive and informative initially. I went through three rounds of interviews. After the last one, HR gave me good feedback and said they'd follow up with a debrief and next steps. But I never got the debrief, even after sending two follow-up emails. So, I was ghosted after the whole 2-month thing.
- Tell me about challenges you faced in past projects.
Business Strategy Analyst
I applied through a friend who works at Unity, and they got back to me about 3 weeks later. The whole process involved 6-7 interviews, with two being technical and four focusing on personal aspects. It kicked off with an HR phone call, followed by a brief Zoom meeting with the direct manager. Then, I had a case study at the office with the direct manager. After that, there was a take-home assignment to assess my analytical skills. This was followed by a presentation of my work to three employees. The next step was an in-person meeting at the office with the head of the department, and finally, an HR interview. The entire process took about a month and a half to two months, which felt pretty quick considering the number of interviews.
- Could you explain your motivation for wanting to join Unity?
- What are your reasons for seeking to depart from your current role?
