First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Sprout Social.
Data Engineer
There were a few rounds, and it was a bit different from typical interviews, more like a conversation and working together. The technical interview involved designing a data/pipeline diagram, including a specific visualization for the sports industry, and then explaining how to build the dataset and ETL process. I didn't make it past this stage because I asked for specific column details to build the dataset, as the question was specific to the social media industry, which I'm not familiar with. After that, I had a Coffee Chat to meet team members and learn more about the company. Then, there was a behavioral interview focusing on teamwork and conflict resolution. Finally, there was another behavioral-style interview, very specific to how you'd collaborate with data scientists and stakeholders. I wasn't selected because I wasn't firm enough in saying no to stakeholders.
- How do you handle a stakeholder who requests something that's not feasible?
Customer Success Manager
My first screening interview was with a lively, engaged recruiter who asked great questions and made me feel exceptionally welcome and excited about the opportunity. Unfortunately my second interview with the hiring manager was extremely impersonal, to the point where I questioned if the hiring manager on screen was actually AI. They did not take any time to get to know me, read questions off to me rapid-fire like they were being launched from a cannon, and did not ask any follow-up questions nor engage in any conversation. Obviously, I was not selected to move forward nor would I have enjoyed working in such an environment. Please have some humanity in the workforce!

Renewals Manager
I had one interview with the recruiter for the role. It wasn't a great experience. They started with basic questions like "Tell me about yourself" and "What do you know about the company?" Then they asked about salary expectations. I told them my base pay and OTE, and was told I was higher than what they were offering. The recruiter then tried to get me to withdraw myself. I said I would still be willing to speak with the hiring manager to understand the role and the experience they're looking for that fits their salary. The recruiter made it very clear the salary is non-negotiable. With a few minutes left, I asked what the top skill the hiring manager is looking for is. The recruiter said the role requires a high level of negotiating customer contracts, so negotiation experience is key. I wasn't surprised when I got the email saying I wouldn't be moving forward. The salary offered was $60k base, $120k OTE, which is lower than the industry standard for this role.
- Can you tell me about yourself and what you know about the company?
- What are your salary expectations?
Software Engineer
I had a technical interview with a senior engineer. The questions were fair, but I don't think I did my best. What bothered me the most was the interviewer's attitude. They complained about having too many meetings and said they mostly do firefighting instead of new development, seeming like they really didn't want to be there. It makes me question what's going on at Sprout if interviewers seem to hate their jobs or the interviewing process. During the technical part, I felt rushed and barely had time to think before they gave me the answer and moved on.
- Can you describe a project you were involved in?
- How would you find the intersection of two arrays?
- Could you design a system for Chicago bakeries to sell cupcakes?
