I've interviewed for three different senior advisor cyber roles recently and the hiring process feels broken. The interviewers seemed uninterested and like they were just going through the motions, possibly because they already had someone picked. It's really frustrating to be interviewed by people who clearly don't care about the process, especially when my experience is a good match for the roles. They asked general behavioral questions that weren't very specific to the job.

Applied online and about a month later, had an initial screening with a recruiter. They were upfront and flexible about pay, and I was able to negotiate a good relocation package, salary above what was posted, and a generous starting bonus. The recruiter answered my questions about reporting structure, the job, and the work culture. They kept in touch and set up an interview with the hiring director, a senior peer, and in-house counsel. This was the only interview, lasting about an hour. It involved roundtable STAR-based questions about how I prioritize work, how I handled specific past conflicts with clients and staff, my leadership philosophy, and other experience/work habit questions. The interviewers were friendly and attentive. I felt I did well but was uncertain. Two days later, I called and received an offer. I could start remotely but had to relocate within a month to anywhere in CA, with a hybrid schedule of two days on-site (Pomona/Rosemead) and three days remote.

Confirmed questions5 questions
  • When you have a lot to do, how do you prioritize your tasks?
  • Can you share an example of a past conflict with a client and how you managed it?
  • Tell me about a time you had a conflict with staff and how you resolved it.

We had a standard interview process with a few video calls to check out your skills, both with people and technically. It started with a recruiter call to check your skills, why you want the job, and how you interact with people. Then, a video call with a technical manager to check you out and talk about the less technical parts of the job. This interview is mainly for the manager to get to know you and for you to get to know them. Finally, a technical interview with some of your future colleagues. In my case, it was two colleagues, a more senior person, and another technical manager. They checked your technical ability and your people skills.

  • Describe a situation where you had to deal with a challenging task and how you approached it.

I had a quick phone chat with a recruiter for a Category Manager IT role. They wanted to know about the purchasing contracts I handle and my salary expectations. It turns out they're actually looking for someone to manage big service and energy contracts, not really the IT products mentioned in the job description, which I thought was interesting since I asked about the IT part. The recruiter was very friendly, though. The call was a bit unexpected, happening just a few days after I applied online.

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • Could you tell me about the value of the purchasing contracts you currently manage?
  • What are your salary expectations for this role?
