First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at PetSmart.
Sales Associate
I applied for a retail sales associate job at Petsmart but when I showed up, the position was actually for Petshotel and the interviewer said it would be mostly dealing with dogs. Even though I applied for a different role, I would have taken the Petshotel job anyway. The interview was on January 29 and she mentioned she had a few more candidates to interview and would get back to me. It's now February 20 and I haven't heard anything. About a week and a half after the interview, I called the store for an update. An employee took down my info and said the manager would be back on Thursday. Petsmart tends to ghost candidates they don't think are a good fit. I might be a bit slow due to a TBI, but I believe I'm a better communicator than the hiring manager. I used to shop at Petsmart but I won't support this location anymore because of their unprofessionalism. I was also rejected by Pet Food Express, but at least they sent an email, which shows professionalism. I'd rather shop at a place that notifies you of rejection than one that ghosts you.
- Could you introduce yourself?
- Would you mind getting dirty?
- Are you okay with being around dogs of various sizes?
Salon Leader
The interview process was okay, but the follow up is where the manager at the location decided to lie to me. A lie that I easily caught her in within 60 seconds after getting off the phone with her. Then PetSmart HR decided to follow up with their own lie, which was again proven false within seconds. They failed to even bother to get someone competent to read the email I sent in as my feedback on the process and the dishonesty of their manager. Instead their rep decided to double down on an already proven false statement. This is the first time in 32 years that I have ever walked away from a company that has lied to me during the prospective hiring process. It is also the first time that an interview has made me reevaluate the relationship that I have with them and it has made me make the decision to never apply to work for PetSmart ever in the future and never do business with this company again.
- Can you discuss your previous experience and career history?
Customer Service Representative
The interview questions are easy and straightforward, basically designed to make candidates comfortable and to form a base for the rest of the interview. These questions are for assessing background, motivation, and general skills, not for challenging problem-solving or technical scenarios. They are often used as icebreakers to check basic qualifications and if the candidate fits the role.
No confirmed questions were included in this interview report.
Doctor
You start by applying on the PetSmart careers site or job boards like Indeed. Make sure your resume shows off your animal care or customer service skills. If you're applying for a vet role, include your medical qualifications. Next, there's a quick 15-30 minute phone chat with HR to go over your background, when you can work, and if you're really into animals. For Pet Care jobs, they'll ask about your pet experience; for vets, they'll dive into your clinical skills. Then, it's either in-person or video interviews. For entry-level jobs, expect one or two 15-30 minute chats with store or operations managers about pet care stuff like nutrition, dealing with customers, and working with a team. It's pretty relaxed, and lots of people get offers super fast, sometimes right away. For vet roles, there will be more interviews, including with Banfield vets. They'll ask technical things like how to figure out pet reproductive problems or talk about a tough case you handled. You might also have to do a practical test.
- Do you like animals and what kind do you have?
