First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at M&T Bank.
Tech Intern
It was a pretty lengthy interview process, but easy overall. First, I had one Behavioral/HR Screen interview. Then, I had a technical interview with the hiring manager. A week later, I got a verbal offer. As a freshman, the interviews felt pretty easy, with no coding questions, mostly broad questions. Even the technical part only touched on basic data structures like graph algorithms, linked lists, and arrays, with the rest being general resume questions.
- How do you go about debugging slow code
- Could you explain the difference between linked lists and arrays
- What is the difference between BFS and DFS
DevOps Engineer
The hiring manager was primarily interested in my Ansible skills. The interview went really well, and we covered topics like Ansible Playbooks, challenges faced during playbook execution, experience with complex playbooks, the distinction between command and shell, and general past experiences.
- Can you explain what an Ansible Playbook is? Also, what challenges have you faced when running one? And have you written complex playbooks before? What's the difference between command and shell? Lastly, tell me about your relevant past experience.
- Tell me about your experience with Ansible Playbooks, any difficulties you've had running them, and if you've written complex ones. Also, explain the difference between command and shell in Ansible. And share some of your past experiences.
- What are Ansible Playbooks, and what issues have you faced while running them? Have you written complex playbooks in the past? What's the difference between command vs shell? Any past experience related to these topics?
Analyst
The recruiter seemed rushed in their questions. I asked about the salary range, which was broad, and inquired about details for the higher end, as it aligned with my experience. The response was curt. It would be helpful if the job description specified role levels (like junior vs. senior) to avoid wasting time for both the recruiter and applicant if their experience exceeds the role's level.
- What is your expected salary, considering you know they have a budget?
- Can you provide details on the salary range for this position?
Quantitative Analyst
I applied for a quant position on the Fair Lending team and went through 4 rounds of interviews with the team. It seemed to be going well, and they were ready to offer me the job. However, HR later called and said they needed 5 references, which seemed excessive for a mid-level role. I provided the references, including a former manager. After submitting them, HR contacted me again, stating the references were flagged as suspicious. Despite my offer to have them reach out directly to verify, HR relied on automated systems and rescinded the offer that same day. This whole process wasted my time and the time of my references.
- What technical questions were asked concerning the construction of models within the credit domain?
- How do you approach communicating with different stakeholders?
