First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at M&T Bank.
Bank Teller
I applied online and then got a call from HR in Buffalo, NY about three weeks later. They set up a phone interview for the next day with someone else from HR. This call lasted about 10 minutes and covered my past experience, asking about times I went above and beyond for a customer and why I wanted to be a teller. After they said they wanted to move forward, they scheduled a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager at the local branch. The in-person interview was similar, with the same kinds of questions, plus a role-play where they handed me an object and asked me to sell it. A few days later, the HR person called again to check how I thought the interview went, confirm my interest, and offered me the job. An offer letter followed via email, requiring an electronic signature for a background check and setting up a drug test with fingerprinting. The training is three weeks and requires full-time commitment.

The recruiter reached out after seeing my resume online and discussed the position, offering an interview. I accepted, and since I was working, I scheduled it for two weeks out. When I got to the headquarters, the recruiter was really nice and took me to a room with about ten other candidates. Some people were filling out applications, and some already had them done online. I filled out another pre-interview form with my contact information. After about ten more minutes, the recruiter called my name and took me to a room where I met the HR director for the first interview. She was also very friendly, seemed to know a lot about the job, and was excited about me joining. After that interview, I was led into the actual branch to meet my future manager and assistant manager. They were both very polite and not intimidating, even though they both asked me questions for the final interview. Then, I got drug test papers and had 48 hours to complete it. I turned in the papers the next day, and after they were received, I got a call at home with an offer that was $0.50 more than I asked for and included full benefits!
- Can you share your best customer service experience?
- What changes were you seeking from your previous employer?

The online application was easy to fill out. First, I had a phone chat with an HR person, then I went in for an in-person interview with the manager I'd be working with. It was tough and annoying trying to set up that second meeting though. Getting voicemails and emails back from HR was difficult, even though other people there seemed to reply pretty quickly.
- Can you tell me about a time you had to handle a customer who was upset?
