First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Intercom.
Software Engineer
So I had two interviews back to back. First up was a values fit interview with a Staff Engineer. We talked about stuff like the projects I'm most proud of, how I fit with Intercom's values, and how I deal with ambiguity and ownership. Then, I had a coding challenge. It was about solving a problem with agent assignment and task management. Think data structures, queues, and designing a system under pressure. Intercom did send over some prep materials beforehand, like a detailed interview guide that told me exactly what to expect, the values they're looking for, and what they expect at my engineering level.
- Design and implement an agent assignment system that distributes conversations across agents based on availability and capacity limits.
Customer Success Manager
The first interview was a recruiter call. It was supposed to be 30 minutes but went on for 50 minutes. The recruiter stuck to a script and couldn't answer some questions about the role because they were in a different region. This felt weird since I was told to review company materials beforehand, which mostly repeated what the recruiter said. The hiring manager was late and seemed rude. When I asked about company culture and mentioned online reviews, they basically confirmed the reviews were accurate without much extra info. The recruiter gave me inconsistent preparation materials and guidance on how to approach the interview, which made me more concerned about the culture and expectations. I decided to pull out of the process.
- Can you describe your approach to managing customer success plans?
Solutions Engineer
The whole thing took about three weeks and had six parts: first a chat with a recruiter, then an interview with the hiring manager. After that, I had two interviews that focused on cultural fit. Then came a panel interview where I had to do a presales-style product demo. Finally, I had one last check-in with the recruiter. It felt a bit drawn out, though the people were nice. Some interviews got cancelled with not much notice, which made it hard to track the schedule and know what was next. For the product demo part of the panel interview, it wasn't super clear what they wanted, and there wasn't much help to get ready. I tried asking my buddy but didn't get much guidance.
- Please be ready to discuss the company values and how your previous customer interactions align with them.
- How have you handled customers in the past, and how does that relate to our company values?
Accounting Manager
It took about 4-5 weeks to get through the whole process. I chatted with the recruiter, the hiring manager, a panel of 3 stakeholders, and the controller. Everyone was really nice and it was mostly behavioral questions, nothing too tough. My recruiter, Dez, was awesome throughout. She was super thoughtful, always checking in to see if I needed anything to get ready for the next steps. She was really clear about when things would happen and what to expect, which made it feel open and organized. I really liked that she kept me in the loop quickly, even when things shifted or got delayed, and I always felt supported. They were really professional and friendly, making the whole thing easy and not stressful.
