I went through a cognitive test, a recruiter screen, a hiring manager interview, and then a virtual onsite with four interviews back-to-back. After initially being rejected post-screen, I was brought back in when the hiring manager had a change of heart. It was noticeable that during all five interviews, I didn't encounter any women or people of color. A scheduled female POC for the panel was swapped out last minute, and the recruiter didn't even realize until I pointed it out. As a woman of color, the absence of DEI and representation was significant. All interviews were recorded with AI, without explicit consent. The opt-out was hidden in the calendar invite, and their disclaimer basically said if you're not cool with tools like BrightHire, this company might not be for you, which felt unnecessarily rigid. The recruiter was good about communicating and provided feedback, which was appreciated. But generally, the lack of openness, changing expectations, and a company culture that seems to value speed and profit over inclusion left a bad taste.

So I actually tried out for the AE role on the Mid-Market team first. During that interview, I got to chat with a manager from the Relationship Management team. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about the people I met at Intercom during the interviews. They just seemed like a fun group to work with. Plus, the communication was awesome the whole way through. My recruiter, Otto, was amazing and kept me in the loop the entire time.

The initial recruiter call for this role was pretty standard, but it didn't really spark any interest in the position for me. The recruiter described the process as seeming really demanding, with a lot of expectations put on me as the candidate. It felt like the recruiter was implying I should be lucky to even be considered, which struck me as odd. I believe interviews should be a mutual evaluation, where both the company and candidate see if there's a good fit. But here, it felt more like the company was asking for a lot without giving much back. This made me feel unenthusiastic about continuing. Given this experience, I'm not keen on moving forward with Intercom. The process felt very one-sided and didn't impress me at all.
