First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at HDR.
Design Coordinator
An internal recruiter reached out via email to schedule an interview with some principals and team members. On the day of the interview, two principals, one project manager, and one architect conducted the interview. There wasn't really time for any questions. The conversation mainly focused on the firm's culture, its market reach, and what it's like to work there.
- Could you describe the types of buildings you've worked on?
Electrical Coordinator
It was a phone call, then a virtual interview, followed by an in-person interview, and finally an offer. Not too many technical questions, mostly about motivation and fit. They went through my resume and asked for explanations. The interviewers were really nice and personable. It was a low-stress experience. Just be ready to talk about your career goals, motivations, and how you deal with conflict and deadlines.
- How do you manage when you have several deadlines approaching?
- Can you describe your career aspirations and what motivates you?
- How do you approach and resolve conflicts?
Project Coordinator
The interview process for the Project Coordinator role at HDR was pretty straightforward and not too difficult, but also not overly casual. It was a round-table discussion with several of the principals, which made it feel collaborative rather than high-pressure. They asked general background questions and project-related topics to understand my approach to coordination and teamwork.
- What are your thoughts on sustainable design and its importance in projects?
Structural Engineer Intern
I applied online. About two months after applying, I received an email for an interview. Three senior engineers conducted the interview. They provided some information about the company and the job role. Following that, they inquired about my past experience with software like ETABS and asked some technical questions.
- Could you tell me about the projects you've worked on?
- Can you give me some insight into shear wall design?
- What's your past experience?
