Behavioral Technical Presentation

Run away. These "jobs" are nothing but shameless funnels for free work. There's no actual position being offered. I got reached out to on Linkedin by an internal recruiter, who said "your profile really stood out ;)". First round was a video interview by the recruiter, who was 10 minutes late, but apart from that was a very standard first round including salary expectations. The salary range for the position is good, but what does it matter when the job doesn't exist? A week later I get the email saying I've progressed to the "case study", which you always fly through to. Then weeks passed by with no case study being sent, so I had to follow up to see whether this was still happening, after which they called and emailed me back saying I just slipped through the cracks and they still wanted me to do the case study. I followed through with it. It was a joke. They asked me to create 4 separate completed video ads for social for their existing app BeReal, including one freeform one where the brief was "Make an ad that you think will go viral and make lots of people download the BeReal app! Go wild with creativity and show us your best motion editing skills without constraint." Plus a load of written tasks and market/competitor analysis. All within the time constraint of 48 hours. Plus a silly Maki Test. For free. All usable, commercially-viable end products that they could use, for free. They're as bad as their competitor MWM. Pure exploitation of naïve, desperate people who they'll go cold on as soon as they send in their work. I pushed back on this saying they could either pay me for doing this, or we can walk through my existing portfolio on a call. They ghosted. Laughable. Okay so my work is so amazing that you reach out to me to hire me for a position that already had over 100 applicants on Linkedin, yet somehow not amazing enough that you need to make me do a bunch of work for you to assess me, and the salary is so high yet you don't want to pay me for this work, when my previous clients were more than happy to pay me for trial videos and stated this upfront? Don't waste your time with these people. These jobs don't exist. I also found it ironic how at the top of the test they explicitly state that you can't copy/paste from chatGPT or AI tools, yet they clearly used AI in generating the task 🤣 And in communication. I've copied the task below so you can see how ridiculous it is. All in 48 hours with no compensation. Choosing beggars.

Behavioral Technical Coding

I got to the third round of interviews. First, they screened my resume. Then, I had a chat with the technical recruiter about my background. After that, I was given a take-home assignment where I had to build a machine learning prediction model, which involved data cleaning, transformation, modeling, evaluation, and visualization. They reviewed my submission and I moved on to the next stage. This involved an interview with two senior data scientists where we discussed my take-home submission, concepts related to it, and other machine learning fundamentals.

The reviewer of the test assignment was not aware that people who are not employed don't have access to market analysis tools, as they cost a lot. Therefore, the test assignment was characterized as being too much based on personal assumptions and ad libraries (but what is an alternative?). When I confronted HR with this in the feedback session, I received the reply that the company tried to give access to the candidates, but due to technical reasons, it didn't work out. I personally can not see how this answers the criticism.

So, the interview process started with HR, then another quick call with HR. After that, there was a case study. Then another small call with HR. Next, I interviewed with two managers. After that, HR called me again to let me know I was rejected. Apparently, there was supposed to be another interview with the CEO or someone higher up. I did appreciate the HR reaching out personally, but honestly, it was way too much effort; they could have just sent an email. The interview with the managers wasn't great; the interviewer seemed distracted and wasn't really listening. Plus, the interview was in a meeting room with terrible sound quality. I felt a bit disrespected.

  • Can you share your experiences and background?
  • What are your ideas about the job?
  • How do you think you did on the case study?
