& Process

The process is quick, you get invited to an informational zoom call explaining the onboarding process and what is expected of you as a potential new employee. The in-person interview is to determine whether or not you can handle the workload and if you have the right time, effort, and motivation to be a door to door sales rep.

I got a message on LinkedIn from a recruiter. We had a brief and friendly phone chat where they gave me the job description and set up an initial meeting with the hiring team. That went well, and then I was scheduled for a coding interview. They mentioned a possible HR round afterward. The coding question was pretty straightforward; I finished it early, optimized it, and provided the correct time and space complexity. Three days later, the recruiter informed me they were moving forward with another candidate but didn't give a specific reason, even after I asked. I was really interested in this role because it seemed like a good fit for my background. It would have been helpful to get some feedback.

I'm a digital nomad and was looking for a remote job. I have experience with SolarCity and selling Sunrun products. I reached out to a friend who works remotely at Sunrun, and he told me they had remote positions and encouraged me to apply. I'm a US citizen, authorized to work in the US, and have a US address. At the time of my interview, I was in Mexico City. I contacted the Sunrun recruiter, Aubrey McIntosh, in Salt Lake City. About a week later, I interviewed with two managers, and it seemed to go well. Their only concern was that I'd be working from Mexico, and they weren't sure if that was allowed. I pointed out that they already have remote workers nationwide, so why would my situation be an issue? They said they'd look into it and let me know. My interview was in late November 2024. They mentioned a new class wouldn't start until January 2025, but they'd still inform me of their decision. After the interview, I asked Aubrey for the managers' emails to send thank-you notes, but I never heard back. I then started following up on my application status with Aubrey weekly for over a month via phone and email, only getting one response. Finally, I contacted two other Sunrun employees, and they provided the answer I needed. One responded in 2 days, the other in about a week, and both said the same thing: Sunrun wouldn't hire a US citizen with no restrictions and a US address for a remote role that only requires a computer, phone, and internet, which I have. They are clearly set up to support remote teams, so the complete lack of response from the Utah managers and their corporate recruiter baffled me and ruined the application experience. I believe this is something hiring managers and recruiters for remote teams should know immediately, or at least be able to easily find and communicate. It's easily obtainable and verifiable information.

I had my first interview with HR, then a second with the head of the group, and the third with the hiring manager. The first two interviews went well and I enjoyed them. However, the third interview made it clear that it wasn't a good fit. The hiring manager seemed more focused on asking accounting questions rather than assessing my ability to do the job. I also got the impression that the hiring manager was quite arrogant, though that might just be a poor initial impression.
