First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Northern Trust.
Analyst
Went through a 2-round interview process. The first was a virtual aptitude test with about 100+ questions in an hour, covering topics like time & work, percentages, distance, vocabulary, and logical reasoning. It was moderately difficult. The second round was a virtual technical interview, which was also of moderate difficulty.
- Could you start by telling me about yourself?
- Can you explain what reconciliation is?
- What are the golden rules of accounting?
Enterprise Governance Specialist
I interviewed for a role at Northern Trust and it was pretty disappointing. The process lacked professionalism and structure. There was no initial HR screening call, so I didn't really get a good sense of the role or if it was a good fit. The hiring manager said I wasn't a strong match after the interview, which was rescheduled twice. I only had the job posting details and no HR context before that. I'm still interested in Northern Trust, but I hope they improve their process for candidates.
- Could you discuss your background and elaborate on a situation where you encountered a difficult stakeholder?
- Can you detail the process and lifecycle of data governance, focusing on the data retention process?
Investment Associate
The process was pretty long, with 5 rounds in total. It started with a quick 15 minute phone call just to see if I was interested, why I wanted to work at Northern Trust, and get to know me. After that, I had a one-on-one with a PA where we talked about how my past experience fits this role and my market knowledge. Then, two PMs interviewed me, asking about my market knowledge depth, my reasons for wanting this role and field, and other general interview stuff. The fourth interview was a panel with the team where they asked more intense questions about markets, the economy, and investment philosophies, really digging to see if I was qualified. The final interview was in person, meeting the team face-to-face. This was mainly about team chemistry and seeing if they could picture me on the team. It was a long process, but it felt natural and easy-going. The Northern Trust team treated me like a person and were understanding about life outside of work.
- What's your take on the market?
- What makes you want to work here?
Data Engineer
This was for a loan default prediction project. We had our own payment data, and to make the model better, we also brought in external credit bureau data like credit score, inquiry count, and public records. The first thing I did was clean up and join this bureau data with our customer records. Then, the next step was creating features like a recent score drop, an increase in inquiries, and any delinquencies. After that, I added these features into the model.
- Can you walk me through the process of building a loan default prediction model, specifically using both internal payment data and external credit bureau data?
- Could you explain how you cleaned and joined the external credit bureau data (like credit score, inquiry count, and public records) with the internal customer records?
- What kind of features did you engineer for the model, for example, things like a recent score drop or a rise in inquiries?
