First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at MassMutual.
HRIS Developer
I appreciated the chance to interview with the team. Though most of my interactions were positive, I want to give some constructive feedback on the later stages. The interview process had six rounds and took eight hours, which is a lot of time. I think the process could be better if they communicated the expected timeline more proactively at the beginning. Also, the last interview felt really adversarial, making things tense for me and the other panelist. I value the company's reputation as a former employee, but a smoother, more communicative approach would better respect candidates' time and help the company keep attracting great technical talent.
- Can you describe the software you've developed and its integration with other systems?
Financial Advisor
I was referred by a recruiter to interview with a financial advisor for an in-office role. During the interview, several red flags came up. They asked about my citizenship, and when I said I am American, they implied that could not be true because of my last name. Later, after I mentioned that I speak another language, they said, “That’s great, we’ve been aiming to target that community,” which deeply disturbed me.

Life Underwriting Consultant
Applied online and got an email the next day from HR to schedule an interview. The interview went well. I was told I would advance and should expect feedback the following week. I followed up 10 days later when I hadn't heard back. The HR Rep discussed salary ranges and company benefits via email, and mentioned she expected to hear from the hiring manager within a week or so. Four weeks after I emailed for an update, I got an email stating the role wasn't being filled at the moment and encouraged me to look for other openings at the company.
- Can you elaborate on your past experiences and qualifications?
- What are your technical skills pertaining to life underwriting?
System Director
There will be a technical assessment round via video covering SQL, Python/R, algorithms, data structures, and system design. Expect 1-2 rounds (often panel formats) that will cover problem-solving, sales skills, and service scenarios. Soft-skill questions commonly asked are: “Tell me about yourself,” “Greatest weakness,” “Describe a stressful situation,” and “Where do you see yourself in five years?”. You may meet 2-4 team members simultaneously, especially in later stages, during panel or team interviews, blending technical and behavioral evaluation. The final interview is often with a senior manager or director and focuses on long-term fit, company alignment, values, and vision for your role.
- Can you describe a typical day in your previous position?
