First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Boehringer Ingelheim.
Product Manager
First a recruiter called, then they asked me to do a test project. After that, I had a video interview where I presented and reviewed the test project. That was it, no follow-up at all. The whole thing felt kinda scammy, like they just wanted ideas from the project. The lack of follow-up, even a basic rejection message, suggests they might be incompetent. It makes me wonder about their drug development process if they can't even manage basic communication. This kind of public-facing behavior isn't great for the pharma industry's reputation.

Data Engineer
I had an initial screening interview directly with the hiring manager and was then invited to an interview morning (presentation plus multiple panel interviews) in person at their Vienna location. The interviews were collegial and designed to let me highlight my skills and simply to find if I fit the position. All communication was directly with the hiring manager, who answered any questions I had immediately. I ultimately declined the position for purely personal reasons, but had a very positive image of the team and company. Salary offer is numerically lower than the USA but excellent for Vienna. The company also has very good benefits (relocation, 38 hour weeks, german classes for family, loads of vacation, discount transport and food etc).
- After describing the role and projects, are you interested in this position?
- Would you be happy to focus on this area instead of other topics you have worked on previously?
Consulting Manager
I applied online. About 1.5 months later we had an online interview. A Senior Internal Consulting Manager participated in the interview. HR was not present at the meeting. The interview lasted 1 hour and was very technical. During the interview, I realized that the job advertisement did not describe the job well and did not clearly mention the tasks. My CV clearly states the projects I have worked on, I could not understand why they invited me for an interview. As a result, I think there was a misunderstanding. The interviewer was very polite and friendly. But I think HR could improve in terms of job descriptions and candidate selection. The interview consisted of 3 parts: 1- The job description and information about the company were shared 2- I was asked to introduce myself and share my background 3- I was given 3 business cases and asked to solve them.
- Regarding a product launch, how would you calculate its profit potential, using an example disease to illustrate the profit calculation?
- Describe your process for evaluating which products an R&D center should invest in and which ones it should not.
- What KPIs do you utilize when evaluating R&D investments?
Sales Representative
The initial part of the interview process was pretty fast and straightforward. After applying, I was contacted by HR to arrange a virtual screening interview. On the very same day as the screening, I got an email inviting me to an interview with the hiring manager the following week. It took eight days to get an invitation for the panel interview round, which involved two separate one-hour interviews, each with two regional managers. I was told I was a finalist and given a timeline for the potential start date and onboarding/training. I sent a follow-up thank you email the next morning and got a reply within an hour saying they'd be in touch. Eight days later, on a Tuesday, HR called to say they were swamped with other positions and projects and were wrapping up interviews, and I'd hear about final decisions in the next few days. I thought maybe by the end of that week. It's now almost two weeks later with no further information. I messaged the hiring manager on day 8 to ask for any updates or if they needed anything else from me. Three days later, still no response. My status on their careers page hasn't changed, but the job posting has been taken down. Apparently, from what I've found out, they have a reputation for ghosting candidates.
