Software Engineer
My interview experience at Toast was a bit unusual compared to big tech companies. It felt like they have this strict binary yes/no checklist, and you're supposed to say exactly what's on it, instead of really showing your problem-solving, leadership, or architecture skills. For instance, they don't really care about the logic behind your code, just that it runs. And for system design, they're not looking for the best solution, but a specific SQL query. While this might work for them, this kind of interview style relies more on luck than actual skill. On the plus side, the recruiter was really upfront with feedback.

Sales Development Representative
I interviewed for the Hybrid Development Rep (HDR) role and had an excellent experience. The process was transparent and well-structured: first, a recruiter screen covering role expectations, light behavioral questions, comp, and timeline. Then, a manager interview with behavioral questions and a cold call role play exercise. Finally, a round with two managers diving deeper into coachability, past experiences, and growth mindset. What stood out: Toast provided Sandler methodology materials upfront, compensation was disclosed immediately (no games), and the feedback loop between rounds was excellent. The manager's coaching after the role play showed their development culture in action. Timeline was ~2 weeks total. They're genuinely looking for coachability and work ethic over perfect execution. The role play tests your ability to build rapport and probe for pain - study their process beforehand. Overall, one of the most respectful and transparent interview processes I've experienced in sales. They practice what they preach about coaching culture.

Account Executive
Very Lengthy... 1. Phone Screening 2. Phone interview w/ hiring manager 3. Zoom interview w/ hiring manager - Give project analysis presentation over a business in the territory you're applying for 4. Zoom interview w/ VP - Redo presentation w/ feedback This company is definitely thorough. I felt like the feedback given to me wasnt very clear. I understand they want you to surprise them with the "grey area" left to you, but in my personal opinion it seemed in the last interview they were looking for specific answers.. if that is the case I feel as though the feedback on the 3rd interview (initial presentation) should be more precise. Overall I didn't walk away feeling angry at the company for the process, I just think maybe a little more guidance on what they're looking for would be nice. Was frustrating to make it to the very end and not get the offer, especially when what they were looking for I fully comprehended, but took a separate angle with the "free will" given to me.
- How would you transition from an account management role to a head hunting one?
Marketing
The recruiter was upfront, which I liked, but the whole thing ended up being a letdown. I went through several interviews, including a panel and another one-on-one with the hiring manager. I was told I'd hear back by Monday morning after the last chat. Monday came and went with nothing. For two weeks, they kept pushing the decision date back – first Wednesday, then Friday, then the next Monday. The reasons were usually unclear and there was no real outcome. I get that things get delayed, but the way they handled it felt disrespectful because they weren't clear and didn't follow through. Even though I was a finalist and made myself available for everything, including last-minute meetings, I only got rejected after multiple missed deadlines and only after I told them I had another offer. It's a shame because Toast talks about being value-driven and caring about candidates, but this process didn't show it. I wish they had communicated more promptly, made a decision faster, and respected my time and interest.
