The interview process consisted of five rounds in total. The first three rounds were with a potential peer, the reporting manager, and a team lead, focusing on job-specific responsibilities and my experience. The fourth round was with HR, where we discussed salary expectations, my notice period, and checked my Chinese language proficiency, which is needed for managing regional stakeholders. Although I was told there would be a final interview with the HR VP, it never got scheduled. The interviews were conducted in English.

The interview process included an online assessment (OA) followed by two virtual interviews (VO1 and VO2). The OA had 4 easy-to-medium LeetCode problems. VO1 started with a discussion about my personal experience, and then a LeetCode problem with a unique context, where prefix sum was the optimal approach. VO2 also began with personal experience before presenting a medium LeetCode problem best solved using backtracking.

So, the interview process was way too long and honestly, a bit of a letdown. I had four interviews in total. Started with HR, then had two chats with people on the team, and finally met the hiring manager. Everything seemed pretty normal and I thought I was a good fit until the last talk. The hiring manager seemed to have already made up their mind about me and basically brushed off my resume. They said that because I had 'managerial experience,' they didn't think I could do the hands-on, execution-focused parts of the job. I tried to explain that I'm totally fine getting my hands dirty with execution, but it felt like they weren't really listening and had already decided. It didn't feel like they were genuinely trying to understand my background or give me a fair shot. What's really annoying is that this totally clashed with what the other interviewers said. If they already thought I wasn't right, why did they even let me get this far? It felt like a huge waste of time after all those rounds, and that final conversation really soured my view of the whole process.

The second one again asked about research and some practical questions like what kind of metric would you choose to measure whether the answer provided by AI in the Tiktok app is useful to the users.
