First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tata Consultancy Services (North America).
Junior Engineer
So the interview is like a three-part movie. First, there's a quick test to see if you can think fast with logic and numbers, like a brain workout before you even talk to anyone. If you ace that, you go into the technical part where senior engineers will grill you on your logic, coding, and if your projects are as good as your resume says. Finally, there's the HR part, which is basically a vibe check to make sure you're a team player who fits the company culture, not just someone who can code.
- Can you walk me through your portfolio and previous work?
- Let's discuss your past projects and contributions.
- Describe your experience as reflected in your portfolio and previous work.
IT Trainee
The whole interview was conducted in English. They asked me to write pseudocode on paper for a logic problem in any programming language. Afterwards, they inquired about my career goals and my willingness to commit to a long-term employment of over two years with the company.
- Could you write pseudocode in any language to solve a logic problem?
- What do you expect from this job?
- Can you commit to staying with the company for more than two years?
Software Development Engineer
So the first part is this online assessment thingy, it's called TCS NQT or TCS Digital or TCS CodeVita. It's like a test you take online. If you're going for the TCS Ninja to SDE role, doing well here is super important. It has sections on aptitude and reasoning, like math and logic stuff, and then programming logic where they check your basics in C, C++, Java, Python, and OOP and data structures. Then there's a hands-on coding part with one or two problems, not too hard. They also throw in some SQL queries and basic database MCQs. If you pass that, you get to the technical interview. They mostly ask about Data Structures & Algorithms, like sorting, searching, hashing, and problems with strings. They also care about time and space complexity. OOP concepts are big too, like inheritance and polymorphism, and they want real-world examples. Database and SQL are on the table, so expect joins, normalization, and queries. Basic OS and networking questions might pop up. And you'll probably have to code live, like checking for palindrome strings or numbers, or making stacks/queues, or finding the second largest element in an array.
- Could you write the SQL query for this?
- Tell me about Data Structures and Algorithms.
- Can you explain Data Structures and Algorithms?
IT Intern
You'll start by submitting your application or resume. Then, you'll go through one or more interviews. These could be phone screenings, technical tests, behavioral interviews, or final assessments. They'll check your tech skills, how well you communicate, if you fit the company culture, and your problem-solving skills. For tech jobs, expect coding challenges or case studies. The last steps might include talking about salary and checking references before they offer you the job. Keep in mind, this all changes based on the company, the specific job, and how senior the role is. If you prepare well, learn about the company, and practice common questions, you'll have a much better shot.
