So I had a pretty good interview experience recently. The process had two rounds, which I thought was pretty effective. The first round was with HR, where we talked about my background, skills, and how they fit with the company's values. It was a good chat, and I liked getting to ask about company culture and team stuff. The second round was with the hiring manager, which I was most excited for. They asked about specific domain knowledge for the job. The questions were really insightful and made me really think about my experiences and how they'd work for the role. I felt good about the interviews and hopeful for what's next.

The interview was about an hour long, starting with introductions where I talked about my background, including my education, past jobs, and how I got them. I also presented my recent ICLR paper, covering its motivation, methodology, and results. The technical part covered machine learning basics, specifically decision trees and ensemble methods like Random Forests and Gradient Boosting. They asked conceptual and problem-solving questions to gauge my grasp of how these models work, their pros, cons, and when to use them. Lastly, we discussed a research paper they gave me beforehand. I summarized my understanding of it, explained its approach, and answered questions to check my deep understanding and ability to apply it to real-world ML scenarios.

I had three interviews for the HR Advisor position at Sony in November 2024, and the experience was very positive. I applied via LinkedIn. The process involved a virtual interview with an HRBP, then a virtual interview with the Manager, and finally an in-person interview with the Manager and two team members. They kept me well-informed about the progress at each step. At the end, they were interested in making an offer and asked for my salary expectations again. At that point, I had just received an inflation adjustment at my current job, making my expectations not align with what Sony could offer. They suggested I apply for a second, more senior but technical role (focused on the Workday system), but it didn't fit my career goals, so I declined. Still, I really liked the company, the team, the environment, and the culture. I'm keeping an eye out for other HR opportunities at Sony.

As a Software Engineer, you'll be expected to design, build, test, and maintain software. You'll work with product, design, and QA folks. Your job will involve optimizing performance, debugging, and scaling systems. We use modern dev tools and agile methods. You should also keep up with tech trends in areas like multimedia, AI, or embedded systems, depending on the specific role. The coding part usually happens on a platform like HackerRank or Codility. You'll get 2-3 coding problems to solve within 60-90 minutes. Expect questions on data structures (arrays, strings, trees, hash maps) and algorithms (sorting, searching, DP, recursion). Make sure you can think about problem-solving and complexity. Some jobs might ask stuff about multimedia or networking.
