First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at GoCardless.
Account Executive
The interview process had 3 stages, it was pretty simple and straightforward. First, there was a screen with the recruiter, then I met with managers and the VP. After that, I did a role play of a discovery call with two managers. They gave me an offer very shortly after this. Everyone was really nice the whole way through.

Software Engineer
The interview process was pretty good, with fast feedback and useful tips before interviews. The interviewers were also proactive. The coding round was a bit intense because you have to finish and run the app to show results; good communication about your thought process is crucial here. The final technical and behavioral interviews were typical, involving a code review, designing a system architecture for the same area as the code review, and questions about your background and handling different scenarios. Make sure you're ready to use the STAR method for experience-based questions.
- How would you enhance the service's resilience?
- Can you review the provided code?
- Design a high-level architecture for the same domain as the code review.
Customer Implementation Manager
The interview process had 4 stages. First was a recruiter call, then a call with two team members. The third stage was a presentation of a case study to the hiring manager and another team member. The final stage was a meeting with an executive stakeholder. The first two stages were mainly to check if my past experience matched the role and included some behavioral questions. Apparently, the hiring manager usually is present in the second stage, but they were unavailable during my interview. For the third stage, I had to do a role-play presentation or demonstrate how I would guide a client to use the Gocardless Dashboard. Even though the dashboard seemed straightforward, I didn't pass this stage. The feedback given was that my presentation was too technical and lacked specificity for the target audience. This was surprising because I don't have a technical background, so I couldn't go into much technical detail. I also consistently asked if they had any questions during the presentation, and if they felt something was missed, they could have pointed it out. The rejection felt inconclusive, and I believe I wasn't a good fit for the team. I have no hard feelings, as everyone I interacted with was very respectful and professional. The salary offered was between 40-50k pounds plus bonus, which I feel is below the market rate for 2024.
- Can you share an example of a challenging project you worked on in the past?
Sales Representative
It was a standard sales interview. First, a recruiter call, then a 1-on-1 with the hiring manager. After that, I had to give an in-person presentation to sales leadership. There was also a zoom call from their office with a non-sales team member to see if I'd fit in. I'm not happy because the head of sales was 20 minutes late for the presentation, which was disruptive. I applied for an enterprise role but they ended up offering me a mid-market role with a lower salary because they didn't have enough of a market for enterprise clients. I felt it was a waste of time and disrespectful since I put in a lot of effort.
