A few days after I applied, I got contacted by the hiring team to schedule an initial 30-minute chat. It was pretty standard. The person interviewing me did a great job talking about GoCardless, the company vibe and values, and the job itself. They were super easy to talk to. Near the end of our conversation, they laid out the rest of the interview process, gave some solid tips for what's next, and got back to me fast on my email questions. Sadly, I didn't make it further, mostly because I didn't have as much Fintech experience as others. Overall, it was one of the nicer interview experiences I've had.

Behavioral Technical Presentation Case

So, there wasn't a recruiter call initially, which was a bit unexpected. My first interview was with the CS Director/Hiring Manager. I felt like I didn't do great because I was nervous, but I moved on to the next stage. This involved two parts: a 45-minute "values fit" and a 45-minute "role fit." The recruiter initially told me to block out 1 hour and 45 minutes for both together and asked for my availability. I gave them my schedule, and then for two weeks, nothing. My availability changed, of course, and I sent several follow-up messages about it, but heard nothing back. When the recruiter finally got in touch, no apology, no explanation, just a 45-minute slot confirmed on my calendar for the next day. It was unclear if it was values or role fit. I had to rearrange things to make it work. I'm calling the process 'Neutral' instead of 'Negative' because talking to the hiring manager, CS team, and other folks was really nice. Everyone seemed genuinely smart, into the product, and the company culture. The recruiter changed at some point without a heads-up email, but the new one was fine. I didn't get an offer to move forward, but the new recruiter set up a feedback call, which I really appreciated. She gave me positive feedback and some helpful suggestions for improvement for future interviews. It's rare for companies to do that for rejected candidates, and it was a great touch. GoCardless seems like a solid company, and I'm thankful everyone took the time to chat with me. I just want to stress that one recruiter's seeming disregard for candidates' time can make the whole company look disorganized or even rude. Apparently, from other reviews, this isn't just me.

Behavioral Case Presentation

It started with a nice phone screening, and then I went in for a face-to-face interview. They split it into two parts: one focused on role fit and another was a role play. Both parts went well. I was a bit surprised that only junior employees interviewed me. I didn't meet anyone from HR or any senior managers, which I thought was odd. They used their laptops to read questions, which wasn't great, and it felt like they could have put more effort into knowing them. One interviewer had only been there for 6 months, which seemed strange that they'd rely on newer, younger staff to make hiring decisions. I was told I had the right skills and experience but lacked 'passion', which I found to be a really silly judgment. The interview felt pointless without seeing upper management, a waste of time for everyone. Also, the salary offered was quite low, around 40k GBP. The questions were very company-centric, focusing on passion for GoCardless itself rather than the customers.
