It was the later stages of the interview, so I was invited to the DE Shaw office for in-person rounds. But to my surprise, the interviewers were not present in the office and were at home. I was given a laptop in the office to do the interviews virtually. In one of the rounds, the interviewer was lying on his bed in shorts, which lacked professionalism. I had informed HR that I would have to take a day off from my current job for these rounds, so I lost a whole day's pay. They rejected me even though I was able to answer most questions and refused to provide feedback.

It was a good interview. First, they asked me about my educational background. Then, they inquired about DE Shaw's business model and my long-term career aspirations, specifically my plan for 10 years down the line. Given my background in MA Economics, they delved into economic concepts such as CPI, WPI, Monetary Policy, and Unemployment.

The interview process involves an online assessment, followed by two interview rounds. To prepare, focus on problem-solving (thought process, clean code, edge cases), programming (OOP, concurrency, best practices in C++, Java, or Python), core CS concepts (Data Structures & Algorithms, OS, Databases, Networking), logical reasoning (problem analysis, pattern identification, justification), and communication skills (clearly explaining ideas and solutions).

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • Given S servers, C clients, and a requirement to select exactly K endpoints such that at least minS are servers and at least 10 are clients, how many valid combinations can be formed? Use combinatorics for efficiency and return the answer modulo 10^9 + 7.
  • For a given 2D binary grid representing a satellite image, calculate the 'grey level' for each cell. This is determined by counting 1s and 0s in its row and column: (ones_in_row + ones_in_col) - (zeros_in_row + zeros_in_col). The goal is to find the maximum grey level across the grid and also output the resulting transformed grid.

The interview itself was fine. The questions were standard for a formal interview, and the interviewer was open to questions at the end and answered them honestly. You just need to be prepared with varied experiences, examples, and the ability to explain your resume. However, after passing the first round, I got a call to schedule the second round, which I was excited about. Three days before the second round, I received a calendar invite stating the interview had been canceled. There was no communication from their end. I tried to reach out, but they blocked my number, and I noticed they had closed applications for the role. For such a big firm, this is very unprofessional, especially since they were hiring for a recruitment position.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • Can you share an instance where you had trouble communicating with a candidate and how you resolved it?
