First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cotton On.
Sales Associate
It started with them looking at my resume, then we talked about customer service, did some role-playing, and discussed my availability. After that, we walked around the store and I chatted with the manager about the brand.
- What motivates you to apply for this position?
- Can you describe your experience in customer service?
- How would you handle a challenging customer situation?
Retail Assistant
The interview was pretty chill, like a chat, and not stressful at all. The manager seemed nice at first and easy to talk to. It was a simple process, no extra steps. But, the friendly vibe during the interview didn't really match what the job is actually like. They didn't really explain stuff clearly about training, what's expected, or how they manage things. It felt like the interview gave a wrong idea about the workplace. My advice would be to be upfront about training and expectations. Make sure the interview shows what the job is really like so people can decide if it's a good fit.
- What would you do if you saw a customer put an item from the fitting room into their bag, and would you be comfortable confronting them?
Team Member
A Cotton On South Africa interview typically kicks off with introductions and a rundown of the job, then moves to questions about your personal background and your motivation for joining the brand. You can expect inquiries about your skills in customer service, teamwork, sales, and how you tackle difficult situations. They'll also want to know about your availability and flexibility for scheduling shifts. Given that Cotton On values enthusiasm, inclusivity, and a customer-first approach, the interviewer will assess your fit with their company culture and the fast-paced retail setting. The interview concludes with an opportunity for you to ask questions and get information on what happens next.
- How would you suggest additional products to customers or encourage them to buy more?
- Can you tell me about your background and how it relates to this role?
- What makes you want to join our brand specifically?
Analyst
I spoke with two different people on the hiring team, about 6 months apart. It was disappointing that the hiring process was really confusing and unprofessional. It seems like the company has a lot of turnover and is always hiring, but they seem to care more about 'culture fit' than skills. The managers for these jobs are usually people who have been there for over 10 years and want similar people, or people who can step up when they're not around or can't do the job because they're mostly not locals. One person on the hiring team told me I was under-qualified (implying the managers wanted someone with more experience or that they're picky and I wouldn't be able to do the job), and another person said my resume was perfect for the job.
