First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tata Steel.
Digital and Brand Specialist
The overall experience was really messy and communication was terrible. I never got a response when I emailed the business before the first interview. Even when I sent the presentation they asked for, there was no confirmation it was received. When I got to the interview, the presentation was already set up. The first interview was with two people who hadn't been there long and were already leaving, which felt unprofessional and unhelpful because there was no one experienced or on the hiring team who would be there if I got the job. It was hard to get honest answers about the business, especially about long-term prospects. The second interview was better, the interviewer was nice and accommodating. Even though it was supposed to be a 'casual chat', it was mostly the interviewer talking for almost 2 hours, and I could barely speak. Both interviewers were 20 minutes late for both interviews, which was inconvenient since they ask you to arrive early for security. After the interview, I had a call with someone from HR who was nice. Three weeks later, I still hadn't heard about a decision. I hadn't received any written communication from the hiring manager beforehand, so I couldn't follow up directly. I called the HR person and was told 'they let all candidates know last week'. Within 5 minutes, I got the rejection email. I provided feedback on the interview process, which was ignored. I followed up again and was ignored again. For a job in the comms department, the communication was awful. I don't feel my application was taken seriously, even though I went through two interview stages. Based on this experience, I'm put off applying for future roles at Tata Steel.
- Can you share how you've driven change in previous workplaces?
Intern
To get into Tata Steel as an intern, they first look at your resume. Then, there's an online test that covers aptitude and technical stuff. After that, you'll have a technical interview where they ask about core mechanical topics and your projects. Finally, there's an HR interview to check out your personality, how you work with others, and what motivates you. Having good basic knowledge, knowing about the industry, and being able to communicate clearly really helps you get selected.
- Can you explain how a blast furnace operates?
- What are the primary components of a heat exchanger?
- What's the distinction between hardening and tempering processes?
Senior Manager
The interview process had 2 rounds. The first round was with the Chief of IT Projects and some other senior members. They asked me technical questions about IT project management and using Agile, Jira, and Scrum. I was also given a case study to work through, dealing with managing multiple projects happening at the same time that had competing priorities. The second round was with the CIO and two other Chiefs. They asked me questions about the future of work, my ideas on how digital will affect the Manufacturing industry, and tested my knowledge of LCNC platforms and AI/ML models.
- How would you manage several projects running at the same time with not enough resources?
- What is your approach to managing scope when a project goes off track?
- Which project management tools have you used before?
Agent
The interview process involved HR, situation-based questions, a bit of technical knowledge, project discussions, management skills assessment, tricky situation handling, and critical reasoning checks. It was generally friendly, with a panel of 3 interviewers. They occasionally asked about family background. After the interview, I had to fill out a feedback form.
- Could you elaborate on your weaknesses?
- What would you consider your strengths?
- When faced with a choice, do you lean more towards product value or brand value?
