& Process

The whole thing took about 4 months from start to finish, but the actual interviews were done in about 3 weeks. It started with HR to chat about salary, the role, and benefits, which took around 30-40 mins. After that, I had two separate online chats with the team lead and another team member. They both hit me with behavioral and scenario-based questions, trying to figure out how I'd handle different situations with teammates, other departments, and bosses. The last step was a chat with the director, which was also about scenarios and seeing if I'd be a good fit for the company.

So I was contacted by a recruiter in December 2023 for a TPM role at SiriusXM. We chatted, discussed salary and expectations, and they said interviews would be soon. Then in Feb 2024, the recruiter reached out again saying the role requirements changed and the process would be delayed. I was fine with that. Then I didn't hear back until October 2024. They said the role was back to the original scope but with a lower salary. I still wanted to be considered. After almost another year of silence, they contacted me in June 2025 to start the actual interviews. I had four interviews and they all went well, with interviewers and recruiters giving positive feedback. Three of these interviews were while I was out of the country, but I made it work because they said the role was urgent. I was scheduled for a fifth interview, but on that same day, they told me they weren't moving forward because I have a consulting background and someone else had more product experience. It was surprising because that's something they could have figured out in the first chat. I get that hiring can be tough, but going through so many rounds after long gaps and then being rejected for something obvious from the start was frustrating, disappointing, and not very professional.

So I have eight years in the software biz and this interview was kinda weird. It was a panel with some engineers and two senior managers from their US HQ. For most of it, just one junior engineer talked to me, asking basic-to-medium C++ stuff. The others were quiet till the last 10 mins. Then, the same engineer asked harder questions, with this weird smile, making it feel more like a competition than working together. Near the end, the senior managers threw in some personal questions, like why I didn't go back to a past job or why I'm not doing academia. Felt less about my skills and more like they were judging my life choices. Craziest part? The recruiter told me they asked about stuff we never even talked about! Good thing I didn't go further, I need a respectful place to work, and this wasn't it.

The interview process was very straightforward and the communication from SiriusXM was consistent and proactive, making it my best experience to date. Initially, I had an interview with a skip-level manager. Following that, the recruiter informed me about the next four interviews: one technical, one focused on cross-team collaboration, and two for culture fit (behavioral). All interviewers were punctual, friendly, and asked pertinent questions. They offered valuable insights into the company, its technology stack, and its culture, which increased my desire to join the organization.
