First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Rockstar Games.
UX Designer
I had two rounds of interviews. The first one was with a recruiter and it was really relaxed. The interviewer was really nice and let me take my time. The second round was a technical interview and that was also really nice. Both interviewers were easy to talk to and approachable, and they asked leading questions. We ran out of time in the second round though, so make sure your presentation fits within the time limit.

Software Engineer
Had a normal and simple first interview with a recruiter. Then there was an online assessment, it included two LC easy problems and a basic OO class design question. The next interview was with a team member and that's where things got bad. The interviewer seemed super uninterested, apathetic, and unwelcoming, like I could've done anything and they wouldn't have cared. They asked data structures and memory questions, not coding ones, varying from easy to a bit harder. Then there was another simple OO class extension design coding problem. I decided not to proceed because if the interviewer was their best representation, the company culture probably isn't great either.
- How would you create a class that incorporates the functionalities of two given classes that share some methods, without altering the original two classes?
Game Programmer
The interview process at Rockstar was moderately challenging. It started off well with friendly people in the initial stages, and salary expectations were shared early, though they were a bit lower than the market rate. I had about two technical interviews before they invited me to the office. I wasn't expecting another technical interview at the office, I thought it would be a culture fit. It was really awkward not being allowed inside the office building, not even the reception, while it was pouring rain and I was 40 minutes early. I ended up going to a nearby cafe and started to feel bad about the company. The last interview started okay with some engineers, but then a senior person came in and the others went quiet. This person wasn't interested in my thought process, just wanted very specific answers to specific problems. His approach was unpleasant and forceful, and after about 20 minutes, I knew I didn't want to work there. I figured the work environment wouldn't be great, likely due to overworked teams, a rigid management style, and a poor work-life balance. They might justify it by saying they make GTA and that's how they operate, but I think things should be better in this century. My advice: if this isn't the reality, improve your hiring process and interviewers. If it is, work on your company culture.
- Could you describe how you would place cars at nearby intersections to give the impression of a busy city?
Network Engineer
It was a lot of interviews. Started with HR screening, then talked to the hiring manager. Had another call with HR. Then met with system engineering managers, network engineers, and producers. After that, another call with HR. HR asked about visa sponsorship, and I said yes. They confirmed sponsorship would be provided. This happened every time I talked to HR; they seemed very hesitant about sponsorship, like the budget was tight. The network engineering team didn't ask challenging questions to test my knowledge, with fewer than ten questions total. Producers showed limited knowledge of network engineering despite many years (over 8) of experience. They also sometimes had unrealistic demands.
