First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Rockstar Games.
Frontend Developer
The interview process is pretty robust. Your HR person is leading you through the process answering questions and so on. For the role, they are only just screening your software thinking and your understanding of the domain. No BS.
- What makes you want to join Rockstar Games?
UI Developer
It was unclear where I stood with the team throughout the whole process. First, there was an initial phone call with a talent advisor. Then, I had a Zoom Interview with 3 senior members of the Tools Department, followed by another call with the talent advisor. Six weeks passed with no update, other than me asking if I was still interested. Sixteen weeks after the first interview, they asked if I would take the position if relocation was required. I interviewed two more times with team members from the Tools department who stated they were impressed, but had some uncertainty about my current fit, and wanted me for another role not yet available. After I asked if I could put together some of my specific programming work and build them an application in WPF, I realized they were just stringing me along, almost like a game to see how far a graduating student would go for a position. I submitted a presentation of my work, and after a week of them having it, I received notification that they would not be moving forward. Don't let them waste your time. They used a carrot and a stick approach, and I wasted over 20 weeks. People's time has value whether or not they work for you.
- In what ways do you think your design background is more advantageous to our team compared to a computer science background?
Front End Developer
I got a referral from someone at Rockstar Games for the Front End Developer role. The recruiter was nice and the process was pretty standard. After the first phone screen, I had to do a timed Codility test with multiple choice/true-false questions on JavaScript/HTML/CSS and a React sortable table task where some features were missing. The test wasn't too hard, but the coding environment kept bugging out while I was typing the JSX part. After passing that, I talked to a senior team member in the UK. It was a straightforward chat about my experience and the team. I passed this too. Lastly, I had two interviews back-to-back with 2-3 team members (developers and PMs). These talks weren't super technical, except for questions about what I thought would be the next big thing in web development or explaining the differences between cookies, session storage, and local storage. After a long wait, I got an email the next day that sounded like a generic rejection for an initial application.
- Could you explain the distinctions between cookies, session storage, and local storage?
- What are your predictions for the future trends in web development?
- What are the lifecycle methods in React?
