First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mutual of Omaha.
Information Technology Intern
My experience interviewing at Mutual of Omaha was pretty good overall and quite professional. It started with an initial screening call to discuss my background and what I'm interested in. After that, I had a more in-depth interview where we went over my skills and how they fit the role. The people I spoke with were nice and made sure I knew what they were looking for. They also gave me a solid idea of the company culture and what they expect.
- Describe a situation where you encountered a challenge and explain how you successfully navigated it.
Full Stack Engineer
The first step was a 90-minute HackerRank test with 3 questions covering DSA, API, and SQL. After that, I had a 30-minute HR call where they asked a lot about my resume and knowledge of the company. Unfortunately, I couldn't proceed because I'm not a US citizen, despite having work authorization; they specifically require citizenship. It was disappointing since I was really hoping for this role, especially because it's fully remote.
- Regarding the HackerRank test, for the DSA question, it was about fitting different sized boxes onto a truck with limited space, where each box has a specific item capacity.
- For the REST API question, the task was to use the Java SDK to invoke an API and then process the returned data using available JSON parsing libraries.
- The DB/SQL question involved writing a query to retrieve reports, focusing on calculations for net loss and net profit.
Product Manager
The interview process was pretty quick. They are very big on the STAR format, so if you are unprepared for that and have not interviewed in a while, make sure you practice that. They are also big on education, so you need to demonstrate education, whether that is formal or informal. Be ready to speak to it. STAResult(Outcome) is huge too, completion of the project on time is not a sufficient answer. I think they are looking for metrics.
- Tell me about a time you faced a short timeline and how you dealt with it.
- Can you provide an example of a small problem you tackled and its outcome?
EAP Counselor
I found the EAP counselor job on their website and they were pretty fast to respond and schedule an interview. A previous coworker had actually recommended this place to me. I had a screening interview where HR went over my resume and past jobs. The interview lasted about ten to fifteen minutes. They told me that due to a conflict of interest, I wouldn't be allowed to do any outside contract work as a therapist, and could only work for them. This was a dealbreaker for me, so that's when the interview wrapped up.
- Can you elaborate on your work experience?
- What contract work are you currently involved in?
- Would you be able to take on contract work as a therapist elsewhere, or would your sole employment be with us?
