First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at GameStop.
Game Advisor
I had a chat with the managers and assistant manager. They asked me standard stuff about teamwork, time management, and organization. Also asked about my work history and education. Having experience with the latest and previous game consoles is essential. The vibe was pretty chill, but business casual is the way to go. No online application needed.
- What gaming consoles do you currently own?
- Can you tell me about a time you worked effectively as part of a team?
- How do you prioritize your tasks and manage your time?
Indirect Strategic Sourcing Manager
I met with two HR reps, one of whom asked the questions. I think the other one was the manager and she was guiding the questions. The interview wrapped up 10 minutes in because they were looking for a workaholic and felt that someone seeking a better work/life balance wouldn't be a good fit. GameStop is described as being in a 'startup' environment.
- What draws you to GameStop and this industry specifically?
- What is motivating your transition to a new company?
Assistant Manager
The interview process involved two rounds: first an in-person meeting with the store manager, and then a second meeting with the district manager conducted over MS Teams. Key performance indicators for this role include the minimum percentage of pro memberships sold relative to total customers and the minimum percentage of warranties sold on physical disk games. The business model is facing challenges, and a reevaluation of strategies is needed to avoid obsolescence, similar to the Blockbuster vs. Netflix situation.
- Can you describe how you would encourage an employee to increase sales of pro memberships and warranties for physical games, considering the current market reluctance?
- What are your thoughts on motivating staff to sell pro memberships and warranties on physical disk games when customer interest is low?
- How would you approach motivating an employee to sell pro memberships and warranties on physical games that are not selling well?
Guest Advisor
The interview process was very straightforward. It mostly involved assessing your knowledge of the merchandise and your ability to speak knowledgeably about it. They were also looking for genuine customer service and retail skills. My specific store was great, but the corporate side of things led to employees being overworked, underpaid, and just barely hanging on.
- Can you recommend games that are comparable to this one?
- Describe your experience handling challenging customers.
- How would you handle a situation where you encountered a problem and no manager was present to help?
