Technical Coding

I went through a multi-step interview process with Pure Storage that left me frustrated and disappointed. The process started with a recruiter screening, followed by a 1-hour home assignment, which I completed successfully. After passing that stage, I was invited to two separate 1-hour technical interviews: one focused on algorithms and the other on problem-solving and reasoning. During both interviews, I was able to answer the questions thoroughly and correctly. The interviewers appeared satisfied and engaged, and there were no indications that my performance was lacking. However, shortly after the interviews, I received a generic rejection email from a “do-not-reply” address, stating: “Although we enjoyed meeting you, we did not feel there is a strong match at this time.” This raises a fair question: If my resume, home assessment, and interview performance were not a match, why was this only concluded after multiple hours of technical interviews? These signals should have been clear much earlier in the process. If the decision was made afterward, it is difficult to understand how that conclusion was reached given the interview performance. If the interviews were conducted mainly for formality or benchmarking, that should be reconsidered. Candidates invest significant time and energy into these processes, and that time deserves respect. Overall, while the interviewers were professional, the lack of transparency and feedback, combined with a long process ending in a generic rejection, resulted in a poor candidate experience.

I got to the second round, and more rounds would definitely follow, like a round with the hiring manager (an engineering director) and at least one more with the team of engineers. The flow I experienced was a screen call, then a first interview about management experience and skills, followed by a second interview about CS tech experience and skills, and then... more to come.

Behavioral Technical

The recruiter was professional and outlined the interview stages. However, the interviewer was late and cut me off, calling me "too junior" despite my 10+ years of experience. The interview felt more like a test of dominance and willingness to be subservient rather than an evaluation of competence. This was the second time Pure reached out, so I'm confident in my skills. The interviewer repeatedly asked questions I'd already answered, indicating poor listening. Their unprofessional and condescending behavior suggests potential team culture issues and reflects poorly on the company's image, which could deter experienced talent needed for critical projects like the Pure Storage/Nvidia partnership.

So I applied for a Project Manager role at Pure Storage. First, I had a chat with the recruiter, it was about an hour long, pretty chill and professional. They laid out what would happen next and gave me a good vibe about the company and their work environment. But then, radio silence after that. I sent a thank you note and even a follow-up asking for an update, but heard nothing back. It was a bummer not to get a yes or no, especially since the first talk went so well.
