& Process

The process was pretty straightforward. The first two rounds were virtual: one behavioral and one technical. The last round was in-person, and they covered travel and put us up in a nice hotel. This final round was a mix of behavioral and technical, with three 30-minute blocks. Two were behavioral, and one was technical. It wasn't too in-depth, more about looking at a dataset and explaining how you'd approach solving a hypothesis.

I had a really bad time interviewing with CapTech for a New Grad Software Engineering Consultant role. It started in Fall 2024. I passed the initial screening and was told hiring would go on past Thanksgiving. But after I did the technical round (which was before Thanksgiving), they suddenly said they'd already hired everyone and couldn't move me forward. I was annoyed and felt misled, but I figured maybe I applied too late. Then, around early May, I saw the same job posted again. I reapplied and talked to my recruiter again. They assured me that since I'd already done the screening and technical round, I'd go straight to the final interview. I was excited and prepped for weeks. After a long silence, I followed up and was told scheduling was still happening. A couple of weeks later, I got a call saying my final interview was off because of 'changes in hiring needs.' From what I saw on LinkedIn, it seemed like they had pretty much finished hiring when I reapplied, and I felt like I was misled again. I think I was only kept as a backup in case other people didn't accept offers, but they never said that. This was the second time CapTech strung me along, and it felt like they didn't respect my time or effort. I wouldn't recommend applying to CapTech; their recruiting process felt dishonest and disrespectful to candidates.

The hiring process involved a TA screening, a technical interview, and a final 'power day' which was 2.5 hours long and included interviews with 4 different people. In total, I interviewed with 6 different people, which felt a bit excessive and could have been more efficient. However, the TA did a good job of making the overall experience pleasant and communicated well throughout, which is rare these days. Ultimately, they said they needed someone with prior consulting experience, which was strange feedback. I'll be starting a similar role at a more well-known consulting agency in the new year.

It was a pretty involved interview process with several rounds. The last big one was a virtual power round that lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes. I talked with a bunch of the leaders there, and they were all really good people with sensible questions. I actually got some solid feedback after my interview. The bummer is that the job I was going for got put on the back burner, so all that time was kind of wasted when they said, 'We like you, you did great, but we can't approve the budget right now because priorities have shifted.' It's super annoying, and this place needs to get better at predicting which jobs will actually be open!
