I'm a mechanical engineering major who applied to the 2026 Utilities Consulting Role. After doing more research, I found out it was definitely more business-focused than engineering-focused, so I struggled a bit to answer the why questions. Still figured it was worth a shot, though.

The interview process was a bit chaotic and disorganized. Scheduling info was conflicting. It took about a month to complete. There were five rounds in total. Round 1 was an Introduction/Screening. Round 2 involved an Overview of experience. Round 3, the 'Good Cop' round, also an Overview of experience with a Sr. Manager. Round 4 was a Case Round. Round 5, the 'Bad Cop' round, again with a Sr. Manager. Round 6 was a Behavioral interview. One of the interviewers was actually a Manager, but they were listed as a 'Senior Consultant' on the agenda and in the scheduling system. I'm surprised I didn't get an offer; they seem like a typical consulting firm, nothing really stands out.

The interview process was really bad. The HR person seemed to not understand the candidates' backgrounds and experience. The hiring manager asked theoretical questions, and it turned out he teaches data science classes on the side. They posted fake jobs, not actually hiring, just to get candidates for a different role. From talking to current and past employees and their clients, it seems the leadership is like an exclusive club, with managers who aren't doing as well as others in the industry. West Monroe might struggle to get new clients because of the M&A market slowdown.

I first spoke with HR for a screening. The HR person was really disorganized and kept changing interview dates. Then, I had a 4-hour interview block that included a case study. I met with four people: peers, managers, and a partner. The case study was tough but manageable. Everyone I met was nice and helpful. HR told me I did well, but they were having a hiring freeze and layoffs, so I should check back later. Months later, I got a generic rejection email. Despite the HR issues, the company and people seemed good.
