First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Universal Music Group.
Director
Applied for a role and was aligned with the pay range until in the interview I found out that the range listed was not actually the range they were working with and there was a $100k discrepancy between the publicly listed range and the actual budget. Felt very bait and switch. The interviewer also did not have great deductive reasoning skills when asking me why one of my roles ended in 2020. Then I had to spend valuable precious moments of the 30 minute slot explaining COVID and not my skill set or background. Ultimately, I decided these were red flags happening early on in the process so I decided to not continue on with interviewing with this company.
- Can you explain why your role ended in 2020?
Technology Intern
First there was a hirevue, then a zoom panel interview. The panel interview had two people from the team I'd be working with and was super conversational. They asked me about what teams I might be interested in and asked questions about stuff on my resume.
- What makes you want this job?
- Which teams are you thinking about?
- Can you tell me about your background?
Operations
UMG's interview process was pretty organized and easy to follow. After I applied, I had to do a HireVue interview where I answered some questions about myself and some related to the job. It was a good way to talk about my background, skills, and why I'm interested in the company. The whole thing felt professional and gave me a sense of what UMG is looking for and their culture.
- For the departments at Universal Music Group that you applied to, what interests you most about them, and what abilities or knowledge are you looking to acquire during this internship?
Product Owner
The interview process was frustrating. The recruiter initially said there would only be two stages. However, after I submitted a presentation that was very similar to a project they were currently working on, I was informed that they would no longer be interviewing me. It felt like they wasted my time and got free work out of me. They seem like scammers, so I'd advise avoiding them.
