IT Help Desk
The interview included typical IT questions. There were scenarios where I had to explain technology and how I would respond to customers. It was not overly challenging and with a bit of preparation, it went well. The entire process lasted about 30 minutes.
- How would you explain what a mouse and keyboard are to someone?
- Describe a situation where you had to explain a technical concept to a user.
- How do you handle customer inquiries regarding technology?
PhD Student
You might get an initial screening email from a Principal Investigator (PI) after they reviewed your application, or perhaps you reached out to them first and they want to chat. This initial chat happens over Zoom or phone and lasts between 20 to 45 minutes. If that goes well, you'll receive a formal invitation from the program for an interview. This interview usually involves meeting one-on-one with a potential PI, and sometimes also a group setting with multiple people.
- What motivates your choice for this university?
- Can you elaborate on your past research endeavors?
Computer Room Consultant
So there was one interview. It was mostly about customer service and retail scenarios. They also asked about technical skills in specific software like Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. They wanted to see how I think through problems and asked about what I would do if I had to work alone. If I get the job, there's a week-long 'bootcamp' to learn the skills for the role, which starts in the Fall Quarter.
- It's finals week, and you're working when it's really busy. Three big problems happen at once: the printer breaks down when a student needs to print over 30 pages for their final paper, a teacher tells you that all the PCs in their classroom (about 30) aren't working, and the bathroom on your floor is flooding into the hallways. What's your first move? *or a similar scenario: they just want to see how you prioritize things
Greenhouse Technician
I applied online for the Greenhouse Technician job at UC Davis. Then I had a phone interview. They asked me technical and behavioral questions about my plant care, pest management, and greenhouse maintenance background. They also asked about how I work by myself and get things done. The interviewers were nice and told me about the job and the team. It was a good experience, and the whole thing took about 2 to 3 weeks.
- Could you detail your background working in a greenhouse?
- What background do you have working in a greenhouse environment?
- Can you tell me about your experience in a greenhouse setting?
