I applied in January and then took a Hackerrank OA a couple weeks after. The OA was pretty easy. My first interview was a pair coding assessment where I had to build a binary tree class in Python and fix some broken functions. It wasn't too difficult. The second interview had back-to-back coding questions. The first one was really similar to Leetcode 76 (Minimum Window Substring), and the second one was like Leetcode 3387 (Maximize Amount After Two Days of Conversions). Then, I had three back-to-back behavioral interviews. Most of the questions were about my resume and past experience. Unfortunately, I didn't get the offer in the end.

The interview process started with an online assessment that included three coding questions. This was followed by three technical interviews, each lasting an hour. The first technical interview focused on data analysis, the second on coding and algorithms, and the third on domain knowledge relevant to a PhD or core statistics. After that, there was a final round with 2-3 hiring managers and a senior manager from the relevant teams, which involved a mix of open-ended technical problems and behavioral questions. The process concluded with a purely behavioral round with the HR team and a recruiter.

It was a long and drawn-out interview process. It started with an online technical interview. Then there was a one-hour technical interview, followed by two more one-hour technical interviews back-to-back. I got perfect scores on all four technical interviews. After that, there were 3 behavioral interviews in a row. I did okay on these, but the behavioral questions felt like they were more about personal communication skills than technical ones. Then I got a letter from HR saying I'd have to wait a couple weeks for the next step. By this time, I had other offers from top companies with deadlines, so I couldn't wait around for Two Sigma's long process and risk missing out on those. Their process is just too drawn out, and I bet they lose out on good candidates because of it.

The interviewer was really rude and unprofessional, which was unexpected given the company's good reputation. They skipped the statistics part after a quick background check and then asked me to brainstorm ideas on an open research problem. They kept asking for more ideas without giving any feedback. Even though time wasn't up, they cut me off and jumped to a wrong conclusion. In the Q&A, they couldn't even answer basic questions about the role, saying they lacked information.
