Project Engineer
So, I went through the interview process for a Senior Project Engineer role. It was pretty professional and ran smoothly overall, even though I didn't end up getting the job. It started with a recruiter chat where we talked about my background, my project history, and why I was interested in the company. After that, I had a more technical interview with some project management folks. We dove into my construction experience, how I handle scheduling, working with subcontractors, dealing with permits, and managing project difficulties. The people I talked to really knew their stuff and asked good, practical questions about delivering projects, working in teams, and communicating on big commercial jobs. I liked that it felt more like a conversation than a strict interrogation. They kept me in the loop pretty well, and I heard back quickly about their decision. It would've been nice to get more detailed feedback, but I still came away with a good impression of how professional they are and their project standards.
- Can you share an example of a difficult construction project you managed and explain your approach to overcoming the challenges?
Marketing
I get the vibe that it's not autistic friendly, so I recommend masking as hard as you can. If you fall into being "too much" you'll feel like the interview went well, but that's not what they're looking for. Tone it down, focus on the topic at hand, and color inside the lines. If you're neurotypical ignore this feedback, it'll be an easy interview. But it's one of those interviews that's unintentionally a trap for the neurodivergent. Nothing against the people. It seems like a great company otherwise.
- There was an open ended discussion.
Project Accountant
The interview process details were a bit unclear. I was expecting a phone interview and was told to be ready for it, but wasn't given a contact person. When I checked the calendar invite, it showed a video call, but the interviewer didn't seem to acknowledge it. I'm not sure if he didn't realize it was a video call or if he was using another app and didn't turn off his camera. I also didn't know who I would be interviewing with. I thought it would be someone from Accounting based on our email exchanges about my background and the company. The initial emails discussed why they were hiring more project accountants, which seemed like a standard phone screen. But, it turned out to be with an HR Coordinator, which I only found out at the end. He didn't introduce himself properly at the start. Even though I started asking accounting-related questions about projects, processes, controls, and audits, he couldn't provide much insight. He just went along with it instead of clarifying his role. Towards the end, he asked why I wanted to work at PCL, and I mentioned their growth and employee ownership. When I asked about the next steps, he said they had more interviews and would pass my resume to the Accounting Manager. I never heard back and didn't even get a rejection email; they completely ghosted me.

I went through two rounds of interviews. The first was a video interview where I had to speak to a camera and answer questions on the spot. It wasn’t too difficult if you’re comfortable speaking in that format. The second round was a Teams interview with HR, the hiring manager, and the current student in the role. I found the virtual interview with the manager to be low-pressure and enjoyable. The manager had a great sense of humor, and we even made jokes during the conversation. That said, it’s important to be thoroughly familiar with your resume so you can provide detailed examples and elaborate on your experiences.
