Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at PCL Construction.
Office Assistant
Had a phone chat with an older guy. He talked a lot about the company's 'benefits' and it felt like a one-way conversation. I couldn't really get a word in. Then he really pushed to talk about salary expectations and what I'm making now. He asked this a few times in different ways, saying I didn't have to share my pay, but he kept asking.
- Can you tell me your current wage?
- What salary are you hoping for?
- What is your current wage and what do you wish to make?
Executive Administrative Assistant
I had to take some exams on Microsoft Word and Excel before the interview. My scores were perfect, but I do suggest doing the practice sessions first. The wait wasn't long, and the ladies interviewing me were nice and professional. They asked some scripted questions, but it felt like a natural conversation. They really emphasized teamwork. The Project Director I'd be working for interrupted the interview. I got the feeling he wanted to make sure the person hired would ensure a smooth transition and stick around with PCL for a long time.
- Can you tell us about your experience in the construction industry?
- We need someone who isn't afraid to say 'that's not my job.' Can you work effectively in a team environment?
- Are you flexible enough to handle multiple tasks simultaneously?
Administrative Assistant
The interview process was great. I had two interviews, both 2 and 3 person panels, and a skills test. Additionally, they checked 3 references. Everyone was very friendly and it was a non-intimidating environment. Communication was great. They got back to me quickly after each round so I was never left hanging. They asked the standards (why do you want to work here, describe your experience with a, b, and c), where do you see yourself, etc. A lot of behavioural questions.
- What is your greatest weakness and how did we discuss it in the first round?
- Did you have any questions based on your answers from the first round?
